What Is a Graham Worth to Lovie?

Devin BurksMay 14, 2009

Can Lovie throw caution into the win? A recurring theme last season was close wins and loses. It seems as if every game came down to the last precious moment in deciding of outcomes.

From this pattern, we can see there is nothing adventurous or creative in the decision making of Lovie Smith.

If Lovie is to improve the free safety position some high-risk maneuvers should be considered. Several players could possibly make an impact at free safety.

If Nathan Vasher can return to pro bowl form then this should make Corey Graham an obvious choice.

Previous reports indicated the possibility of Corey Graham playing free safety. 'We have all of those guys in the mix, and we still have Daniel Manning,'' Smith said. ''Look at other players. We have Corey Graham.'' (Chicago Sun Times)

Some may not know Graham has speed ranging from 4.3 to 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. With Graham’s size and speed combination (6’0 193), this makes him an excellent fit for the free safety position.

He also is a solid tackler whom could play a role in stopping the run. This is attribute allowed him to start after Vasher’s return.

On occasion, he was the leading tackler for the Bears. Combine that with the stout defensive play of strong safety Kevin Payne. The secondary will be solidified for years to come, a position that has been tough to fill over the last three seasons.

Numerous injuries and countless mishaps have caused great misfortune to the secondary.

An answer on the roster is available, it will take some calculation and risk to find the solution. If Lovie and Secondary coach John Hoke can put several puzzle pieces together, then this much-scrutinized unit could be a strength instead of a weakness.
