Tracking and Analyzing the Latest Washington Redskins Roster Moves

Dilan AmesAug 26, 2013

It was a busy Monday in the 'Capital' as the Washington Redskins made some roster moves (via ProFootballTalk.com) to create space before the 75-player deadline tomorrow afternoon.ย

They waived injured CB Richard Crawford (out for season) and LB Jeremy Kimbrough, but also let a few guys go. The two most noticeable names on the list of cuts are WR Donteโ€™ Stallworth and FB Eric Kettani.ย

For Stallworth, this isnโ€™t the first time Washington has cut him, but this was his shortest stint with the team, after signing just two months ago.ย

This move should be of no surprise to Redskins fans; Stallworth was entering an already-crowded stable of receivers and it wasnโ€™t a hard decision to choose their promising youth over the decent veteran.ย

Kettani was also an unlikely candidate to make the roster, especially after the recent emergence of Darrel Young as a very quality, young fullback. Besides, the Redskins are lucky enough to have a couple of tight ends versatile enough to play fullback in some sets.ย

Aside from these two guys, the others were no-brainers. The remaining cuts include K John Potter, LB Quan Sturdivant, WR Chip Reeves and LB Ricky Elmore.ย

Out of this group, the only guy who had a respectable chance of making the team was Potter, a strong-legged kicker who would have likely been restricted to kickoffs given Kai Forbathโ€™s consistency as a placekicker.ย

Although Forbath is a dependable kicker, he didnโ€™t have as many touch backs as Washington wouldโ€™ve hoped for last season. This wouldโ€™ve been aided by Potter, but itโ€™s evident the team feels alright with who they have.ย

The Redskins also placed LB Keenan Robinson and S Phillip Thomas on injured reserve. Robinson tore his left pectoral muscle during a July practice, and Thomas recently tore his ACL in their first preseason game.ย

Robinson wasnโ€™t expected to have a huge role in the defense, but Thomas was in the running for a starting spot at safety, an opportunity which is goneโ€”for now. When he does return, he will more than likely get another chance to be a starter, but right now, he will have to focus on getting healthy.ย

Who knows, maybe he'll pick up a few rehab tips from Robert Griffin III.
