American Abroad: Orozco and Johannsson Score, Brooks Gets Hurt

0 of 5

It was another event-filled week for Americans plying their trade abroad. Michael Orozco and Aron Johannsson were the big winners, both scoring.

John Anthony Brooks, only a week before a crucial United States men’s national team camp, was subbed out with an injury, Timothy Chandler and Jonathan Spector finally returned to the field and we have injury updates on Brek Shea and Steve Cherundolo.

Alejandro Bedoya got his first start for new club, Nantes, and Eric Lichaj continued his red-hot start to the 2013-14 season.

Also, in some of the most shocking news of the week, Michael Bradley could be on his way to the English Premier League.

Read about all of that and much, much more in this week’s Americans Abroad wrap-up.

Stoke City picked up their first points of the EPL season with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Geoff Cameron took his regular place at right-back and went the distance. Brek Shea and Maurice Edu did not make the team, but it was reported this week that Stoke manager Mark Hughes hopes that Shea will finally get some playing time next week as he continues to recover from an injury.

Jozy Altidore and Sunderland remain winless, but they did pick up a point this weekend in their 1-1 draw against Southampton. Altidore started and went the full 90.

Brad Guzan and Aston Villa lost to Liverpool 1-0 on an absolute wonder-goal by Daniel Sturridge. Villa have three points from three games after their midweek loss to Chelsea.

The good news for Tim Howard was that he earned the shutout in net for Everton. The bad news was that Everton couldn’t score either, and they tied West Bromwich Albion, 0-0.

John Anthony Brooks started Hertha Berlin’s match against Hamburg but was withdrawn early with an injury. There are no details yet if this will affect Brooks’ ability to play for the U.S. next week in their World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico.

Injury concern for #usmnt as John Anthony Brooks was subbed out of Hertha Berlin's 1-0 win vs HSV in 23rd minute with apparent thigh problem

Jermaine Jones and Schalke fell to Hannover 2-1 with Jones playing the full 90. Schalke only have one point from their first three games. Steve Cherundolo is still recovering from injury and recently underwent a third knee operation. However, it was reported that this latest surgery was only to remove scar tissue, and the club expects him back soon.

Timmy Chandler worked his way back into the starting XI for Nurnberg on Saturday after recently being benched, but unfortunately, they lost to Bayern Munich, 2-0. Nurnberg have two points from three games.

Fabian Johnson and Hoffenheim tied Freiburg, 3-3. Johnson played the entire match. Hoffenheim have five points from three games—a decidedly bright start for them considering their Houdini-like escape from relegation last season.

Michael Parkhurst once again did not make the 18 for Augsburg as they took on Stuttgart on Sunday. His continued problems getting into the lineup are likely to cause his place in the USMNT pool to become tenuous.

In Bundesliga 2, Bobby Wood started 1860 Munich’s match against Paderborn. He played 58 minutes in their 1-0 loss.

Eric Lichaj started once again for undefeated Nottingham Forest, which tops the table in the English Championship. Lichaj played all 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Watford.

Jonathan Spector returned from injury to go the distance in Birmingham’s 3-2 loss to Leicester. Birmingham only have three points from four games. Will Packwood remains injured.

Tim Ream started and played 72 minutes for Bolton in their 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers. Stuart Holden remains injured.

Danny Williams played the last eight minutes of Reading’s 1-0 loss to Blackpool.

Michael Bradley and Roma opened up their Serie A campaign Sunday with a 2-0 win over Livorno. Bradley played the entire match.

Bradley also made headlines this week as it was reported that EPL side Sunderland made a $10 million bid for the U.S. midfielder, via (h/t Pro Soccer Talk's Joe Prince-Wright).

Aron Johannsson started and played 90 minutes for AZ Alkmaar in their 2-0 loss to Utrecht. Midweek, Johannsson scored again—his fifth of the season in all competitions. The goal came off a nifty dribbling effort from the American striker.

In the Norwegian Tippeligaen, Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg beat Sandnes, 3-2, to stay atop the league. Diskerud came on for the last six minutes. Josh Gatt is recovering from injury.

Steve Clark and Honefoss finally won a game, stopping their five-game slide, with Clark in the net for the 3-1 win over Sarpsborg.

Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht beat Sporting Charleroi, 5-2. Kljestan played the entire match.

Alejandro Bedoya got his first start for new club Nantes, but they lost 2-1 to PSG. By all accounts, Bedoya played well.

MLSers, Alejandro Bedoya had a good game. Was ok first half, but was excellent in the second. Nantes' best player over 90 minutes. #FCN #MLS

In Denmark, Conor O’Brien played the full 90 in Nordsjaelland’s 1-0 loss to OB.

Terrence Boyd is still injured and was not in Rapid Vienna’s squad this weekend.

Tijuana and Santos tied 1-1 on Friday. For Tijuana, Edgar Castillo started and went the distance and Paul Arriola came on at the half. Greg Garza and Joe Corona were on the bench and Herculez Gomez is recovering from injury. For Santos, Benji Joya was not in the squad but did play midweek in the Copa MX.

Jose Torres started and played the full 90 for Tigres in their 2-2 draw with Chiapas.

Alonso Hernandez made the bench but didn’t play in Monterrey’s 3-1 loss to Leon.

DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Orozco and Puebla lost to Cruz Azul, 2-1, but Orozco opened up the scoring with a nice header on a free kick. Both Beasley and Orozco started and played the full match..
