Vols Basketball Program Loses One Basketball Scholarship

SEC NationMay 14, 2009

This is absurd! The NCAA needs to rethink their broken system or are they controlled by the BCS?

The Vols lost this scholarship by one point—one lousy point.

The worst thing is they were not evaluated (nor is any other school) on last year's players (only) or this year's players, they were evaluated on players as far back as 2003.

Brandon Crump, a 6'10" PF who had already graduated with a bachelor's degree and continued to take graduate level courses his senior season, did not finish his studies, therefore Tennessee was docked one point.

Major Wingate left one day after the APR's census report. The Vols again were docked 1 point. Had Wingate left one day earlier, that point would not have been deducted, by the way, the day before was Labor Day.

The other dismissals that occurred also counted such as Duke Crews and others, but these were at least under some sort of control of Bruce Pearl.

If Tyler Smith returns for his senior season, then the vols will have to drop one scholarship player. Although with Jurick leaving, this doesn't make the decision too difficult.

The NCAA needs to at least figure out a way to evaluate a schools academic rate on a more relevant basis. How about on a three year basis?

For the NCAA to go back six or seven years and evaluate a school is absurd.

Not only does it effect players, teams, and coaches that may have had nothing to do with the evaluation, it also does not allow a reasonable amount of time for a school to adjust and correct the mistakes of the past.

They get penalized one scholarship for this coming season. I say make the punishments a little stiffer and shorten the time.

It would also be nice if they would only hold a coach accountable for what was or was not done on his or her watch. (This is probably a pipe dream.)

I hate to yell, "It's not fair!"...but is it?
