Fantasy Football 2013: Draft Targets Who Will Benefit Most from Coaching Changes

Jun 8, 2018

Shrewd fantasy football owners know that schemes and opportunity are just as important as a player's ability. That's why it's important to know all of the happenings on the NFL's coaching carousel and adjust your rankings accordingly.

In all, eight of the NFL's 32 teams will welcome a new head coach into the fold.

That means that every player on the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers rosters will be introduced to a new system this season.

These are the players that should see the greatest improvement from a fantasy perspective thanks to their new coaching staff.

Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

No one should be more excited about their new head coach than Michael Vick. After his most disappointing season as a starter in Philly yet, it was time for a breath of fresh air.

Chip Kelly is just the man to provide it. According to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, the quarterback has committed to getting stronger in the weight room and is excited about the running dimension of Kelly's uptempo spread philosophy:

"

I’m going to have my opportunities to do what I like to do in this offense and to run the football... And, yes, I will be a threat. That’s exciting, that’s what I’ve worked hard this offseason for. I’ve built the strength up in my legs to be able to do that.

"

Usually, Vick is too hyped to be a value come draft time. Thanks to his electrifying skills on the field and his risk of being injured (he has played in all 16 games just once in his career), he's almost always overdrafted.

This year is different, though.

Vick's average draft position in ESPN leagues is about 105.6, or the 14th quarterback off the board.

If he can recapture anything close to the form that made him the No. 2 overall scorer in 2010, he could turn out to be the bargain pick that makes your fantasy team a champion.

C.J. Spiller, RB, Buffalo Bills

It's no secret that C.J. Spiller is a first-round talent in your fantasy draft. After all, he finished as the No. 7 running back in the league last season.

With head coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett running the show in Buffalo, he'll be even higher on that list this year.

Marrone is looking to install an uptempo offense himself, but Hackett told WGR 550 that the Bills will be utilizing Spiller as much as possible.

"It's real simple," Hackett said. "We're going to give him the ball until he throws up. So he's either got to tap out or throw up on the field. Let's just put it that way."

The transition from change-of-pace guy to all-out workhorse is going to please Spiller owners this season. He averaged just 12.9 carries and 2.7 receptions per game on the way to his breakout season last year.

With plenty more touches this season, you shouldn't be afraid to target Spiller as early as No. 2 in the draft.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Remember Larry Fitzgerald?

If you don't, it's probably because you've deleted the memory of owning him during his tragic campaign last season. The longtime elite receiver faded into fantasy football obscurity last season, as some guy named John Skelton tried to throw him the ball.

This year, there's hope that Fitzgerald can bounce back and it comes in the form of Bruce Arians and Carson Palmer.

You remember Arians. He's the guy that took Reggie Wayne from a 75-catch, 960-yard season in 2011 to a 106-catch, 1,355-yard guy in 2012. Some of that was due to Andrew Luck coming in at quarterback, but some of it was Arians' arrival in Indianapolis.

This year, Fitzgerald is in a similar situation. His 71 receptions and 798 yards in 2012 made for the worst fantasy season of his entire career.

Taking advantage of those other owners who were spurned by his disappointing campaign last season and snagging him at a bargain price will make you a very happy owner come playoff time.
