Baseball Often Makes You Ask: Did I Just See That?

I have always been under the impression that attending a baseball game is like attending no other sporting event.  To me, baseball has more obscure things happen more consistently than any other sport.

The likelihood of seeing something you never saw happen on a baseball field seems to be greater than seeing something happen for the first time in any other sport.

There are many instances that I have thought of when I first began thinking about this topic, a few from the past week.  First off, Jim Thome getting kicked out of a baseball game.  The nicest guy in sports?  Not likely.

That's why I was extremely surprised to see Mr. Thome get thrown out of the White Sox-Tigers game on Friday night.  Have I seen players or managers get thrown out before?  Yes.  Have I seen Jim Thome?  Yeah, right.

Another instance that occurred at US Cellular Field earlier this week made me really scratch my head.  I had the fortune of attending the White Sox-Twins game on Wednesday night at The Cell and saw something, for the second time, that most people haven't seen once.

For the second time in my last two trips to The Cell, Jason Kubel of the Twins hit a grand slam.  That's right, 18-career-home-run-hitting Jason Kubel.

One more that sticks out to me is a game I had the pleasure of announcing a few weeks back.  North Central College was hosting Wheaton College in a double header, a game I was broadcasting.

Two things occurred in this game that I had previously never saw live in a baseball game. The first was back-to-back half innings where teams batted around (bottom of the third and top of the fourth).

The second saw two grand slams in the same inning by the same team.  I am aware that Fernando Tatis did this roughly ten years ago but to see a team do it in person is mind- boggling.

There are others.  I have also seen Justin Morneau have two home runs called back in the same game. I've seen Steve McMichael get thrown out of Wrigley Field after he was heckling the home plate umpire (Angel Hernandez) during the seventh-inning stretch.

To me, baseball has more obscure things happen in it than any other sport.  Anyone else have stories of seeing something happen for the first time after watching a sport for years?  Leave me comments and let me know, I'm curious to hear.
