Liverpool Transfers: 4 Players Reds Would Love to Add Before Deadline Day

Laura GreeneAug 22, 2013

Liverpool's search for new players is not over yet.

The Reds managed to secure a season-long loan deal with defender Aly Cissokho this week but it looks like they may lose out to Tottenham Hotspur in their attempts to sign Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, as reported by the Guardian's David Hytner.

With less than two weeks remaining in the current transfer window, there are several areas of the team that could benefit from reinforcements.

Last season the Anfield side didn't get their first league win until the end of September but this term they already have three points in the bag.

Which new faces will be added to Brendan Rodgers' side to help maintain their positive start to the new campaign?

Over the following slides we looks at four players that Liverpool would love to add before deadline day.

Tiago Ilori

Liverpool's need for a new centre-back has just taken on an increased sense of urgency.

Sebastian Coates looks set to miss the next six months of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered while on international duty with Uruguay, as reported in the Liverpool Echo.

Coates made just five Premier League appearances last term which suggests that he wouldn't be integral to Rodgers' plans this season. However, already threadbare at the back, Liverpool could do with having more options to call upon in central defence.

The squad is short on senior defenders after bidding farewell to Jamie Carragher, who retired at the end of last season. There have also been rumours linking Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel with moves away from Anfield. Kolo Toure has been brought in provide cover, however he is Liverpool's only fully fit centre-back, as stated by the Mirror's David Maddock.

Liverpool are in need of defensive recruits and Tiago Ilori could be the answer—the 20-year-old has been regularly linked with Liverpool over the summer.

Born in London, Ilori has played in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon since 2006, when he joined the youth set-up of the Primeira Liga side. He made his breakthrough into the first team last season.

The Reds had a £3.5 million bid turned down in June but, according to Maddock, they are prepared to make a fresh advance to secure his services for the season ahead.

Arda Turan

2 of 4

One of Liverpool's most pressing needs is to find a new defensive midfielder to provide cover for Lucas Leiva. In reality, there aren't many good options currently available on the market.

The Reds also need more attacking options on the flanks. It looked like Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian was a possibility, however the 25-year old now appears to be headed for White Hart Lane.

Arda Turan could be just what Liverpool are looking for. Like Willian, he plays on the left wing, has plenty of European experience and is rumoured to be a Rodgers' target, as reported by Ben Curtis in the Mirror.

In 2010, the Turkey international spoke of his desire to play for Liverpool one day. As quoted on Goal.com, he said:

"

Liverpool attracts me because of their tradition. In Europe, I am a Liverpool supporter, so if I go to play in Europe, I would like to play for them.

My dream has always been to play for one of the top European clubs, but you shouldn't make concrete plans in your life because sometimes these plans cannot be achieved.

This is my dream, but for now I'm just working on my football.

"

This week, the Express' Ben Jefferson reported that Turan's agent has said a move to the Premier League was "likely."

According to this report by Sam Marsden on Squawka, Turan made more than 800 passes for Atletico Madrid last season, with a pass completion rate of 84 percent. He won 88 percent of his tackles and even made more dribbles than Arjen Robben and Theo Walcott.

Leandro Damiao

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have been interested in Brazil international Leandro Damiao since 2011.

The club already have four strikers but with Luis Suarez's Anfield future anything but clear, the Reds may be wise to add another to their ranks.

Damiao plays for Internacional in the Brasileirao, where the 24-year-old has racked up 100 first-team appearances, scoring 44 goals.

He showed his potency in front of goal to worldwide audiences during last year's London Olympics, where he scored six goals in five games for Brazil.

This week, the Mirror's Dean Jones commented on Liverpool’s links with Damiao, claiming that he could be a "marquee signing" for the Merseyside club.

Elsewhere, the Daily Star's Nick Lustig suggests that Damiao is open to the "right move" and reports that Tottenham Hotspur are also tracking the striker.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

4 of 4

Another answer to Liverpool's defensive needs could lie in 21-year-old Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

He has made 57 appearances for Schalke in the Bundesliga and also comes with Europa League and Champions League experience.

The Greek, who recently recovered from knee surgery, is said to be back in action for Jens Keller's side. Last month the club released an update, confirming his return to full training.

Despite missing out on a large chunk of last season, due to injury, the highly-rated defender can boast some impressive statistics. This scouting report on Squawka.com, tells of a 97 percent success rate in tackling, and 83 percent of aerial duels won. He also has an average pass success rate of 89 percent.

According to the Mirror’s David Maddock, Rodgers has been interested in Papadopoulos since May and is now keen on bringing him to Anfield on loan, with an option to make the move permanent if he allays any lingering injury doubts.

This week, the Daily Star's Gary Jones reports that Schalke have admitted defeat in their attempts to keep hold of the young defender.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild (via the Daily Star) Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt said: "There are a lot of clubs to take into account. We're going to speak to each other when it takes concrete form."
