How I Became a Steeler Fan

Summer hamiltonMay 13, 2009

I live in Texas, but my Daddy is a very big Steeler fan. Before this past season I had never really watched football, and my dad said that my "girlie girl" self would never like it. I decided to prove him wrong.

So its September, and football season is just starting. We don't have NFL network, so for the first game I had to go to Hooters and watch. I was amazed that I couldn't stop watching, and soon became crazy about the game. All through last season my dad taught me more and more, and before long I could name our whole roster. Besides just learning about the Steelers, I learned about other teams too, and could give opinions about games, and predict winners every Sunday.

The Friday before the game against the Cowboys, I called a local espn radio show called "Zack and the Professor", as I did frequently, to ask their opinions on games, and get some good conversation started. Well, both of them being Cowboy fans,  said the Cowboys would pull together and win. The "Professor" even made a comment about Troy Polamalu, saying he looked like a girl running around. That comment set me on fire! So, I decided to make a little bet.

The bet was, when the Steelers won, he had to wear a Troy Polamalu wig, and a Jack Lambert skirt. If the Cowboys won, I had to wear his Tony Homo(*Romo) jersey at our Texas Road house. Well, as I said, the Steelers won. Me, being kind, didn't get a wig and skirt for him to wear, but called the radio show the next day with some anti Cowboy jokes. No one laughed but me :).

During the Christmas holiday last year, I got my first Terrible Towel, and a sparkly Willie Parker jersey. In the playoffs I proudly waved my towel and wore my jersey, as we defeated the Chargers and the Ravens. The whole week before the Super Bowl, I became a huge fan of the song parodies, Steelers Ladies, Ring less, and Steelers Rock. When the Superbowl came on I was so nervous I could hardly stand. I was ready for victory.

Then the worst happened., for the first time in the game the Cardinals took the lead. When Ben threw the ball to Santonio and he dropped it, I knew we couldn't win. Then, he actually caught one, and we won the Superbowl. I was jumping up and down, screaming and crying all at the same time. I could not believe the first year I became a fan we won our sixth Superbowl.

After football season was over, I decided to learn about teams from previous years, because all I knew before was basically modern day facts. I would now consider myself an expert, and I am so glad I decided to prove my Daddy wrong!
