The Best 25 Football Kits of the 2013-14 Season

0 of 25

There are some truly awful kits out there right now. Liverpool, for example, will be playing in something that looks like it got stuck in the printer. And Swansea expect their fans to pay money for this.

There are, however, plenty of beautiful strips in world football to balance out the awfulness. Here's B/R's rankings of the top 25 kit designs in world football right now…

25. Athletic Bilbao Home

1 of 25

To lift a phrase from The League of Gentleman, Athletic Bilbao consider themselves a local club for local people, which is why they used to produce their own shirts in the Basque region.

These days, Nike are stitching the threads, and this natty effort features a solid red square on the back for increased visibility of the squad number.

24. Chelsea Away

2 of 25

Fresh from murdering a family of Smurfs, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba are here to show off the new Chelsea away strip.

The red and blue horizontal lines make for a very smart design.

23. Stoke Away

3 of 25

Stoke revealed their away kit under the slogan "Stoke Electri-city", perhaps unaware that Michael Scott already owns that phrase

Many European teams are wearing a version of this cookie cutter Adidas design, but the fluorescent yellow piping on the Potters' strip is particularly appealing.

22. AC Milan Home

4 of 25

Balotelli and Co. are smartly dressed this season, thanks to a new home shirt featuring gold Adidas stripes and a thin pinstripe.

The gold third shirt with a mysterious pocket? Not so hot.

21. Inter Milan Home

5 of 25

Elsewhere at the San Siro, Internazionale are wearing a classy version of their Nerazzurri strip, complete with a button-down collar and sleeve cuffs.

20. Derby County Away

6 of 25

Championship side Derby won't forget who they are on their travels, as their name is stitched into the back of their away shirt's collar.

19. Newcastle Away

7 of 25

Papiss Cisse may not approve of the high interest rate lenders adorning this strip, but this blue Puma effort won't leave the Toon faithful feeling, well, blue.

18. Fulham Home

8 of 25

This season's Fulham kit features a unique black V-neck design which conveniently points straight towards their gambling sponsor.

This shirt looks particularly good teamed with their new black and red shorts.

17. QPR 3rd Kit

9 of 25

Queens Park Rangers boast a very nice home shirt—with thin red lines separating the blue and white hoops—but attention must be drawn to their third kit.

Harry Redknapp's side aren't paying tribute to Norwich, but rather their Norfolk Neighbours Caterham F1, the racing team owned by QPR head honcho Tony Fernandes.

16. Real Madrid Away

10 of 25

Jose Mourinho may have left the Bernabeu in a cloud of controversy and disappointment, but Real Madrid may be reminded of him whenever they pull on their away shirt, which is very similar to Chelsea's home kit.

Suffice to say, it's much nicer than their orange third-choice uniform

15. Everton Away

11 of 25

Everton have been brave with their alternate strips in recent years—most notably their bright pink ensemble—but their latest away shirt isn't too dissimilar to their home one.

It features a classic v-neck design and a healthy splash of "sunshine yellow."

14. Club América Home

12 of 25

Mexican giants Club América enjoyed great success in the 1980s, and their latest home strip pays tribute to "La Decada Dorada" ("The Golden Decade").

The Nike design will go down well with those who enjoy Corona, and those who titter at the prospect of wearing a garment with the word "Bimbo" written across it.

13. FC Köln Home

13 of 25

Another club paying tribute to the 1980s are FC Köln.

Die Geißböcke consulted fans on the design of this Erima shirt, which is plain, simple and very effective.

12. Barcelona Away

14 of 25

After sporting one of the worst shirts in world football last season—the "Catalan sunrise" monstrosity—Barcelona's away kit in this campaign pays tribute to the "senyera," the Catalan flag.

The club motto "Més que un Club" appears on the back of the collar.

11. Malmö FF European 3rd Kit

15 of 25

It's hard to make a black shirt look bad.

Sweden's Malmö FF will be wearing this slick effort in their 2013/14 Europa League campaign. Di blåe have experimented with all-white kits for European play, but since debuting an all-black ensemble in 2003, fans have demanded the darker hue.

10. Watford Home

16 of 25

Due to their loop-hole abusing loans last season, Watford were basically an Italian side.

In this campaign, the Hornets appear to be channeling German title challengers Borussia Dortmund with a Puma strip that abandons their traditional touch of red.

Jennifer Aniston is also the proud owner of this kit

9. Tottenham Away

17 of 25

Tottenham will be wearing this bright blue Under Armour uniform on their travels this season. It has a Houndstooth print embossed into the fabric, invoking fond memories of scratchy nylon kits from the early 1990s.

8. Atletico Madrid Away

18 of 25

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone may have brand La Liga "boring," via, but at least his team will look nice on the road in this campaign.

Atleti's new yellow and blue kit is a radical departure from recent designs and reminiscent of the traditional Arsenal away shirt.

7. Juventus Away

19 of 25

Also hitting the road in yellow this season are Italian champions Juventus, whose new strip is inspired by the colours of the city of Turin.

The new home shirt is also very nice, but the away one will provide the most pleasing contrast to Andrea Pirlo's beard.

6. RC Lens Away

20 of 25

This season Lens have dumped the stripes and opted for a sash design on their home and away shirts.

The Ligue 2 side will feel quite regal as they tour the country in this white and gold number.

5. Wigan Away

21 of 25

Wigan may not be plying their trade in the Premier League this season, but that only means they will be showing off their stylish black and gold kit at Championship grounds throughout the country.

4. AS Roma Home

22 of 25

Due to a legal snafu with kit supplier Kappa, Roma are wearing an unbranded homegrown shirt this season. It features their new "3D" crest design and the match-day version has a sponsor slot dedicated to their charity "Roma Cares."

Who needs a kit supplier when a club can make something this nice themselves?

3. Coritiba 3rd Kit

23 of 25

It may look like Celtic had a fluorescent makeover, but this is the third kit of Brazilian Campeonato contenders Coritiba.

The best feature of the shirt is the epitaph "Green Hell" on the back, which is a reference to their nickname.

2. Manchester City Away

24 of 25

What's better than a black strip? How about a gorgeous two-tone black strip?

Manchester City's 2013-14 away kit pays tribute to Ardwick AFC and St. Marks, the two 19th century clubs who would eventually become The Citizens.

1. PSG Home

25 of 25

Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to be the runaway winners of Ligue 1 this season, but they are already the runaway winners in the best kit competition.

With a smart redesigned club crest and block colours taken straight from the Tricolore, PSG's new home shirt is a modern classic. The white away version is equally as pleasant.

Trust the French to design a garment so beautiful.
