Solheim Cup 2013 Results: Europe Dominates Points and Standings in Historic Win

Mike HoagAug 18, 2013

Europe dominated again on Sunday en route to capturing its first Solheim Cup on U.S. soil and second straight tournament win.

It also made other, perhaps more impressive history in the process. After building a commanding five-point lead heading into the final round of singles play on Sunday, the Europe women demolished the Americans, accruing 7.5 points to easily win the tournament 18-10.

Their eight-point margin of victory is the largest since the biennial tournament began in 1990, per Associated Press reporting (via ESPN.com). Overall, the USA leads the series 8-5 but has dropped two straight in the series for the first time.

Things were already looking bleak for the Americans heading into Sunday. Neither team had ever come back from a deficit of more than two points heading into the final round of play, according Jay Coffin of the Golf Channel.

Their hopes were dashed early too, as Europe built a commanding lead after the first five rounds of the day concluded. At that point, the Americans surrendered 3.5 more points to the Europeans while only accruing 1.5 for themselves.

Swede Caroline Hedwall defeated Michelle Wie to officially shut the door on the Americans’ hopes. Her birdie on the 18th green secured the team’s 14th point. Moments later, Catriona Matthew sunk a five-foot putt to halve the round, giving Europe 14.5 points and officially returning the Solheim Cup to Europe for another two years.

Hedwall made some more history with her performance too, becoming the first competitor to post a 5-0 record at the tournament, according to Solheim Cup Team Europe’s Twitter account:

Despite being out of contention, the American women earned three points to the Europeans’ 3.5 during the final seven rounds of golf.

Brittany Lang and Lexi Thompson were the only Americans to earn one point for their team. For the Europeans, Charley Hull, Carlota Ciganda, Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Beatriz Recari and Hedwall each won outright to secure a point and help fuel their team's historic rout.
