Worcester Sharks Director of Community Relations Awarded By Local School

WORCESTER—Worcester Sharks President and CEO Michael T. Lehr has announced that Michael Myers was named the Thomas Jefferson Recipient from the Clark Street Developmental Learning School for 2009 during an awards ceremony held last night at the Worcester Technical High School.

Michael Myers, the Worcester Sharks Director of Youth Hockey and Community Relations with the Worcester Sharks, serves as the primary liaison between the Sharks and local community organizations and also oversees the Sharks community programs and initiatives throughout central Massachusetts.

“Mike is a huge part of our organization and does an excellent job overseeing the Sharks extensive community initiatives throughout central Massachusetts, said Lehr. "The entire Sharks office is proud of Mike and would like to thank the Worcester Public School systems for allowing Mike and the Sharks for the opportunity to get involved.”

Michael has had a strong connection with the Clark Street School over the past few seasons having brought the Sharks flagship community initiative “Be A Leader” and “Reading is Cool” programs to the school. 

In October, under the guidance of Myers, the entire Sharks team and front office joined the Law Firm of Abigail Williams and Associates and revamped the basketball court, playground, outside exterior of the school, parking lots, and street hockey rink at the Clark Street School as part to the first annual “Be A Leader” Community Service Day. 

In January, the Clark Street School held a special “AHL All-Star pep rally” and over 40 AHL All-Stars and mascots participated in the Worcester Sharks “Reading is Cool” program at the school.

“I am honored to receive the Thomas Jefferson Award and would like to thank the Clark Street School Staff for their nomination.” said Myers. “I feel privileged that my job enables me to work with students and teachers throughout Worcester and look forward to another successful season serving the community on behalf of the Sharks.”

Myers has made a significant impact in Central Massachusetts with over 1,300 community events since joining the Sharks in March, 2006. No events have been more impactful than his creation of the “Be A Leader” and “Reading Is Cool” programs.

“Be A Leader”, presented by Abigail Williams & Associates, is designed to provide students grades 4-6 with leadership tips to enrich their lives as well as others around them.

“Reading Is Cool”, modeled after the San Jose Sharks community initiative, is a literacy program designed to promote the importance of reading, both at home and in the classroom. Other programs he has overseen include Rink Buddies, Street Brigade, and Skate with the Sharks.

The Worcester Sharks and the Law Firm of Abigail Williams & Associates are accepting applications for the 2nd Annual “Be A Leader” Community Service Day to be held in October, 2010.
