Manchester United Transfer Rumors: Lack of Moves Won't Hurt Red Devils

Kyle NewportAug 17, 2013

The defending champions of the English Premier League did not make a big splash before this season, but it won't diminish Manchester United's chances at repeating.

United fans were hoping for a big move to improve the roster, especially at midfield. Paul Scholes retired, which means there was room for a key addition.

Jack de Menezes of The Independent believes that the Red Devils will not land either Willian or Mesut Ozil, even though the club have been linked with moves for the pair. Both players have their strengths, but United are likely going for a possession man.

Not making a move could end up costing the club. Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are all talented teams and could make a run at knocking off the defending champs.

United were unable to land Cesc Fabregas, so it does not look like any big addition will be made.

New manager David Moyes hasn't been able to make a splash, but the roster is still one of the best in the EPL.

Michael Carrick, David de Gea, Patrice Evra, Shinji Kagawa, Rafael, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie lead the roster. Those are just a few of the names on the roster, but there are certainly even more players who are capable of contributing to the team.

The Red Devils didn't want to stand still. They wanted to bring in a quality player for the right price. However, nothing presented itself and the club decided not to go crazy.

Moyes' debut was a strong one. Ben Hibbs of Manchester United's official website gives a recap of the team's 4-1 victory over Swansea City to begin EPL play.

United got a couple of goals a little bit past the halfway point in the first half, and they continued to add on to the lead. It was only one game, but it showed that the team is going to be tough to beat.

With their next two matches coming against tough clubs, United will find out quickly if they were right to not make a bold move. Chelsea and Liverpool will provide good competition, and United can gauge just how their roster is against some of the other top clubs. Liverpool may not be up to Chelsea's level, but they can score.

Missing out on Fabregas, Willian and Ozil will make fans wonder what the team is thinking. Winning a championship puts pressure on teams to continue to make moves. After winning the EPL three years ago, United had to settle as runners-up the next season.

Fans don't want to suffer through that disappointment again. For a team that has won the title in five of the last seven seasons, it's tough to question the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer in charge, but Moyes is confident that his team can repeat. Although no big moves were made, the Red Devils have a roster that will challenge for the EPL title.
