Arsene Wenger Right to Apologize to Arsenal Fans After Poor Opener

Kyle NewportJun 5, 2018

Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger issued an apology after his team's shocking 3-1 loss in its English Premier League Opener, and he was right to do so.

Aston Villa pulled off the shocker at Emirates Stadium in England on Saturday, with game recap courtesy of ESPNFC.com. Wenger apologized to the fans after the game, according to Kevin Palmer of ESPNFC.com.

"

I want our fans to be happy and proud of their team and when we lost at home, I just have to be sorry. We didn’t manage to do it today, but we have to bounce back and make them happy in the next game.

Some people will say that it was an overreaction to one loss, but it was necessary after the stunning upset.

The Gunners are looking to improve after finishing fourth in the EPL last year. Saturday's performance was about as bad as it could get for the club.

It was only one game, but the Gunners were hoping to get off to a better start.

Yes, Arsenal had to play with only 10 men after Laurent Koscielny was sent off midway through the second half. Villa had a 2-1 lead at that point, so Arsenal was already in trouble before losing a man.

A quick goal in the sixth minute by Olivier Giroud seemed to be a good sign. However, poor decisions and controversial calls cost Arsenal.

Villa was awarded two penalties—one was successful, and the other led to a goal off the rebound. By the time the second goal went in, Arsenal fans were furious at the team's performance.

Wenger can't do anything about his team's performance now. The game is over, and the team must move on. Fans can only hope that there will be much better preparation throughout the rest of the season.

It was a poor display; there's no denying it. Arsenal didn't look like the team they were last season, and adjustments need to be made.

Issuing an apology was a good move after the team had such high expectations. It shows that Wenger understands that a performance like that is unacceptable. He said what he had to say and can focus on the next game.

Arsenal will need to put together quality games before fans can forget about this one. Fans can only hope that this game doesn't come back to hurt the club in the standings later in the season.

Wenger and his team owed fans an apology. Now they must get back to their winning ways.
