Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao, Gareth Barry: August 17 Transfer Gossip

Ian RodgersAug 16, 2013

The all-too-familiar figure of Wayne Rooney features in our transfer window gossip roundup for Saturday.

The Manchester United striker has been linked with a move to Chelsea, but Jose Mourinho is now facing competition from a rival Premier League manager, claims one report.

But there are a number of new faces in the newspaper transfer-speculation stories with doubts being raised over one multi-million deal in France.

Everton are monitoring an England international, while Napoli manager Rafael Benitez could be lining up another reunion with a former player.

Read on to find out more.

Arsenal Resume Chase for Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney

1 of 5

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rejoined the chase for Wayne Rooney, according to John Cross of the Daily Mirror.

The Gunners are set to compete with Chelsea for the England international, claims the report, after hopes of signing Luis Suarez faded following the Uruguay forward's return to training with the Liverpool first-team squad.

Wenger was linked with Rooney earlier this summer and is now wondering whether United would consider allowing the forward to go to the Emirates Stadium rather than Chelsea, claims Cross.

But Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho is refusing to give up on Rooney and will wait until the final day of the transfer window, according to Martin Lipton of the Daily Mirror.

Monaco Deny Radamel Falcao Will Have to Be Sold

New Monaco striker Radamel Falcao is at the centre of a mystery over his move from Atletico Madrid, according to Charles Perrin of the Daily Express.

The Colombia international joined the Ligue 1 club this summer in a £51 million deal, but his new club are at odds with the French football authorities over the deal, claims the report.

In his article, Perrin says Falcao is earning a tax-free salary, a luxury that has not been granted to other French clubs and gives Monaco an advantage in attracting players.

Monaco may now have to sell Falcao or face a £75 million fine, the report claims, but the club has used its official Twitter account @ASMFC_MONACO to deny the forward will be sold.

Everton are monitoring the future of Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry, according to a report in The Sun (subscription required).

The 32-year-old England international is heading into the final year of his deal at the Etihad Stadium, and City have told him they will not stand in his way if he wants to look for regular games elsewhere, claims the report.

Goodison Park manager Roberto Martinez has asked to be kept informed of Barry's situation, according to The Sun report.

Mamadou Sakho Demands Move from Paris Saint-Germain

4 of 5

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed that defender Mamadou Sakho has asked to leave the club, as Nick Lustig of the Daily Star reported.

The 23-year-old claimed he was flattered at being linked with clubs such as Liverpool and AC Milan earlier this summer, noted Alec Fenn of Goal.com.

The Frenchman slipped behind Thiago Silva and Alex in the pecking order for the central-defensive roles last season, while new PSG signing Marquinhos will leave Sakho's first-team opportunities further limited.

But Blanc insists there is still time to find a solution to the situation before the transfer window closes on September 2.

Bits and Pieces: Javier Mascherano, Marouane Fellaini, Willian

5 of 5

Barcelona star Javier Mascherano could be set for a reunion with his former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez (Daily Express).

The Argentina international is quoted as telling Italian paper Il Mattino that he speaks regularly with the Napoli boss and cannot rule out leaving the La Liga champions.

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini is edging towards a move to Manchester United as Old Trafford manager David Moyes becomes more convinced that he will land his former Goodison Park midfielder (Daily Mail).

Tottenham will have to see off the challenge of Manchester United if they are to land Croatian midfielder Alen Halilovic from Dinamo Zagreb (Daily Star).

Liverpool are favourites to land Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala after both the Anfield club and Spurs entered talks with the Russian side for the £30 million Brazil international, who has also interested Manchester United (Daily Mail).
