Quit Blaming the BCS in December; Start Now

Corey GautreauxMay 13, 2009

Fresh off a wacky season that caused a three-way tie in the Big 12 South, the coaches of that conference decided to leave the BCS tiebreaker in place. Are you kidding me?

Let me get this straight: You whine and complain about how stupid the BCS is, but when given the opportunity to change the rules, you don’t?

Well, who is the stupid one now?

With a chance to really stick it to the BCS and clear up what many were calling a ā€œcomplete disaster,ā€ the Big 12 now decided that the BCS is the best way to break the three-way tie. With all the options available, the Big 12 decided to stick with what didn’t work last year?Ā

Give me a break! Why not adopt the same rule as the SEC (take the two highest ranked BCS teams and then use head-to-head)? Why not get creative and decide on a tiebreaker that would put the ball in your playing field, Big 12?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the problem with the BCS. It isn’t the ā€œstupidā€ computers, it isn’t the ā€œstupidā€ formulas, it isn’t the ā€œstupidā€ tiebreakers; it is the ā€œstupidā€ coaches that refuse to complain until the BCS affects them.Ā

Did Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, or Bob Stoops come out and say one thing (publicly) to get the BCS changed this offseason? Nope! However, I bet if USC, Florida, or Oklahoma get left out of the BCS National Championship Game next year, one of them will whine and cry and tell you how it shouldn’t come down to a ā€œstupidā€ computer.

The BCS is not a perfect system, and that is not what I am implying. I, along with the SEC, would prefer some type of playoff system. However, the idea of a playoff system was shot down by every conference except the SEC last year.Ā

Therefore, we all know the rules now. We all understand that it could come down to some ā€œstupidā€ computer to decide who plays for the national championship. We all understand this, but yet we will all be complaining WHEN our team gets left out, rather than BEFORE that happens.

If a coach doesn’t agree with the rules of the BCS, they should speak out now! If Frank Beamer publicly complained about the BCS today, then I would pull for Virginia Tech if there was a huge jumbled mess at the end of the year.Ā

Why? Because he would have complained about the broken system when it didn’t matter, rather than crying in December when his team is left out.
