This Week in Annoying: The Worst in Sports Right Now

Gabe ZaldivarAug 16, 2013

Alex Rodriguez is still trolling behind the scenes, Justin Bieber took a picture and it's as annoying as you might imagine—and we still have a week of awful to discuss.

If you are feeling a little on edge, it's only because this week was pretty horrible from an entertainment point of view.

Sure, there were some MLB highlights and NFL preseason action to keep us fat and giggly headed into the weekend, but that was about it.

The rest of the time was spent mulling over the usual array of sports personalities acting silly. And by silly, we mean dumb.

Here is yet another installment of me highlighting the lowlights in the sports world. Because misery loves company, I encourage you to nominate some hilariously bad moments from the past week in the comments section below.

Clint Dempsey Tattoo Fail

1 of 7

Not Match of the Day tweeted the biggest fail of the MLS season.

It wasn't a shanked shot on goal or horrible tackle, but a Seattle Sounders fan who honored Clint Dempsey by imagining what he would look like as Mr. Potato Head.

Those cartoon feet my be the best joke of the year.

"Get in the Hole!" Is Still a Thing

2 of 7

While I rather enjoy the stupidity that is screaming "Chewbacca" from the gallery, it's apparent the majority of sports fans are annoyed by the practice at such tournaments as last weekend's PGA Championship.

This one is for you guys.

Scream all you want to, but these bros aren't going anywhere, peppering in "mashed potatoes" with every last long drive from here on out.

It's as much a part of golf as Jason Dufner's tobacco habit.

Alex Rodriguez Being Alex Rodriguez

3 of 7

Yes, we've been riding this guy pretty hard for a couple of weeks, but this story just keeps getting better and better. And by that, we mean it keeps getting worse and worse.

60 MinutesMichael Radutzky reports on allegations Rodriguez's "inner circle in February obtained and leaked documents that implicated Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun as well as his own Yankees teammate, catcher Francisco Cervelli, in the doping scandal that has enveloped Major League Baseball."

You got that?

Rodriguez may not be just some PED cheater, but, perhaps, if the allegations hold out to be true, close to people who squealed on his colleagues.

This is like the story arc for Game of Thrones where things keep getting far more horrendous, but we can't stand to look away.

Perhaps, we will find out Rodriguez had a hand in the sinking of the Titanic. You never know.

No athlete works harder to be so vilified.

No Fun League Strikes Again

4 of 7

Earlier this month, Pro Football Talk reported the NFL was ready to crack down on player celebrations—apparently the league has had enough of your incessant jocularity on the field.

Well, the NFL is continuing its crusade to stamp out fun in all its iterations.

This week, CBS Sports reported the league banned customized facemasks unless players procure a medical release.

Nobody tell the NFL we enjoy tackles or touchdowns, or they may be outlawed as well.

Justin Bieber Creates a New Big Three

5 of 7

This guy, right?

We don't have a problem with Tyson Chandler chilling out in a tank top or Kevin Durant looking like he is about to punch the cameraman.

No, our problem is obvious, and he doesn't wear a shirt, but he rocks a backward cap and a face straining to emote as much swag as possible.

A hat tip to Justin Bieber's Instagram account for reminding us NBA stars have horrible taste in all regards.

James Harrison Hates That Show Promoting the Sport He Plays

6 of 7

James Harrison doesn't like Hard Knocks, a sentiment he made well-known in the very first episode of the preseason

Harrison, not content to merely close doors and flip off the cameras, offered some rather interesting thoughts on the hit show and the ubiquitous coverage around Cincinnati Bengals camp at the moment, via Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer

"

I don't feel they deserve to be here. They did nothing to be here, other than want to be here. They didn't put no blood, sweat and tears into none of this. All these men in here, they did that. They (the cameras) did nothing. No one deserves to see this, to come inside of this unless you're a part of this. That's why.

"

We don't mind that he hates a bunch of cameras at camp, merely that he goes above and beyond to show his disdain on the show and then wonders why he garners so much attention.

He is the kid throwing a fit in Target, wondering why everyone is looking at him.

Not that I would ever say this to his face or he would rearrange mine.

Those Damn Balls

7 of 7

This wasn't a good week for baseball players and their respective groin regions. Allow me to explain.

On Wednesday, the New York Mets suffered a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers who enjoyed a come-from-behind victory, but it was pitcher LaTroy Hawkins who was dealt the biggest blow.

Go ahead and take a gander at the shot he took to the midsection without the aid of a protective cup.

It was a banner week for nut shots because the Detroit Tigers' Jose Iglesias took one that many proclaimed to be right in the worst spot possible.

Thanks to Larry Brown Sports, we see he came away relatively unscathed, because that ball hit a great deal of thigh.

Still, this should serve to remind you kids that there is no shame in wearing a cup. In fact, there is only shame in not wearing one.
