WWE SummerSlam 2013 Results: Alberto Del Rio Retains World Title
Alberto Del Rio remains one of the strongest heels in WWE after successfully defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Christian at the 2013 edition of SummerSlam.
While there were many fans that believed Christian deserved one more run with the title, WWE has proven time and time again that it is firmly behind Del Rio as one of the top stars in the company.
The outcome of this match was clear during the booking leading into this event, as Christian achieved a clean pinfall over the champion on free television and looked to be the stronger star heading into the PPV.
WWE's storyline for Del Rio as the heel underdog that steals the win worked to perfection. Whether the fans like Del Rio’s character or not, the company is doing everything it possibly can to get him over as one of the top bad guys.
With another successful title defense, the Mexican Aristocrat is back to his winning ways.
Christian’s return has once again stalled, and the former champion will now be relegated to the midcard. While he will thrive without the pressure and make many younger superstars look great fighting him, it’s sad to see a talented performer fall into the same rut as he did before he was injured.
Del Rio will be looking to follow up his victory over Christian with another marquee feud, and there would be no better answer than working a program with Rob Van Dam. A battle between the duo would be a match that WWE could sell and would put real heat on the champion.
RVD would inevitably put Del Rio over, but the feud would be a great usage of Van Dam’s talents and experience. Add in the rub winning would give the current champion, and this is the perfect next step for all parties involved.
