Manchester United Transfer Rumours: Luka Modric Would Be Perfect Fit for Club

Richard LangfordAug 12, 2013

Luka Modric was clearly not top of Manchester United's summer transfer wish-list, but he would make a seamless transition at Old Trafford.

His acquisition would certainly take the sting out of an offseason that has thus far been empty of significant arrivals.

David Moyes is considering a bid for Luka Modric now that Manchester United's pursuit of Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas appears over, with the manager a long-term admirer of the Real Madrid playmaker.

With the 27-year-old having been transferred to Real from Tottenham Hotspur for £33m last summer, any initial offer for Modric would have to be in the region of £25m for a midfielder who fell down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, who was his coach until the Portuguese rejoined Chelsea in the close season.

The Red Devils are willing to pay top dollar to provide their midfield with such a boost.

The Daily Star’s Jeremy Cross reported that the Red Devils had £40 million earmarked for Fabregas. In light of that, £25 million for Modric is a bargain.

Fabregas carries the bigger reputation and trounced Modric in goalscoring last year, with the Barcelona star tallying 11 to Modric's three. However, this is a product of their respective settings.

Besides, there is far more to playing in midfield than racking up goals, and the Red Devils aren't exactly hurting for firepower.

When it comes to passing and winning duels, there is no drop-off between the two. Modric is a skilled and crafty playmaker, and would have weapons like Robin van Persie at his disposal at United.

Modric is also more effective than Fabregas defensively. That is exactly what the Red Devils need: a central player who can facilitate the offense, but is also able to start possession.

The Croatian international acquitted himself well while making the switch to La Liga last year from Tottenham. He wouldn't have a problem making the transition back to the EPL.

Modric would be an excellent and shrewd acquisition for the Red Devils. Now let's see if they can finally get a deal done.
