Robin Van Persie Shows He's Still Manchester United's Main Man

Rob DawsonJun 4, 2018

After a summer of change, Robin van Persie showed he is still the main man at Manchester United.

It took 26 of the Dutchman's goals to win the Premier League last season. Already this season, his stats read: one game, two goals, one trophy.

It may only be the Community Shield, the free bread stick before the main course of the league and Champions League, but it's a good start. It may have been won against Wigan of the Championship, but that won't matter to David Moyes.

It's been a traumatic start to life at Old Trafford for the new manager.

He's been frustrated in the transfer market, first by Thiago Alcantara, then by Cesc Fabregas and Barcelona.

He's had to deal with Wayne Rooney, and the unwanted attention from Chelsea. But when the talking stopped, he did what he was brought in to do—win games and win trophies.

He will need van Persie, who turned 30 last week, to continue scoring if he's to keep doing it. With question marks over Rooney's future, he's, perhaps, even more important than he was last season.

But at Wembley, he showed that he's more than capable to handle the added responsibility. With six minutes on the clock, and a few nerves in the stands and on the bench, van Persie sprayed the ball out wide to Patrice Evra, continued his run and tucked a beautifully guided header into the corner of the net.

Then, in the second half, he picked up the ball on the corner of the area. Ten seconds later, it was in the net after he cut inside and rifled a shot that deflected in off James Perch. There was a little bit of luck, but he had made it himself.

Moyes, Rooney and Fabregas have dominated the talk that's surrounded United this summer. But after the chatter stopped, and the real work began, van Persie proved he's still the main attraction.
