Summer Transfer Window Gossip: Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney, Fabio Coentrao
Transfer gossip staples Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney make their regular appearances in the newspapers on Sunday.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has a message for his wantaway striker Suarez, while England boss Roy Hodgson looks set to play Manchester United forward Rooney in the friendly against Scotland on Wednesday, according to reports.
But who else is making the news in Sunday's back pages? Read on to find out more.
Luis Suarez, Liverpool to Arsenal
1 of 5Rodgers has demanded that Suarez apologise to the club and his teammates over his behaviour in attempting to force a move from Anfield, reports Jason Burt of the Sunday Telegraph, among others.
The Uruguay international has been the subject of interest from Arsenal after using the summer to voice his desire to leave the Reds.
But Rodgers has become so disillusioned with the attitude of Suarez in training that he has forced the forward to work alone at Melwood instead of preparing with the first-team squad ahead of the Premier League opener against Stoke City next weekend, as reported by Jamie Jackson and David Hytner of The Guardian.
After the friendly against Celtic in Dublin, Rodgers called on the former Ajax striker to apologise for showing disrespect to the club before he will be considered for selection again.
"There needs to be an apology to his teammates and to the club and, once we get that commitment that he is ready, then we will have the player we have always had.
"
"I have seen him over a period of time. I know it is not the Luis Suarez we know, and I have to protect the fans and the players because they deserve more than that.
"
Suarez, of course, is banned for the first six matches of the season.
Meanwhile, Patrick Collins of the Mail On Sunday offers the view that Rodgers is reaping what he sowed after standing by the controversial Suarez last season.
Wayne Rooney, Manchester United to Chelsea
2 of 5While Rooney and Manchester United have been at loggerheads throughout preseason, Old Trafford manager David Moyes has given England permission to play the striker against Scotland this week, report Charlie Wyett and Ben Hunt of The Sun (subscription required).
England boss Hodgson is under no illusions about the striker's qualities and is set to play him in the friendly, despite United claiming Rooney has been injured during preseason.
Rooney will not play in the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic on Sunday, but Moyes is happy for him to feature for England three days later.
In the same newspaper, United striker Robin van Persie reveals his desire for Rooney to stay at Old Trafford despite Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's interest in the forward.
The Netherlands international told Wyett that "everyone wants Wayne to stay and, deep down, I think he feels the same."
Fabio Coentrao, Real Madrid to Tottenham
3 of 5Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is targeting a move for Real Madrid fullback Fabio Coentrao, no matter what happens with the proposed deal to take Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu, claim Tom Hopkinson and Dean Jones of the Sunday People.
According to the report, Coentrao has told Real that he does not see his future at club, alerting Spurs and Monaco to a possible move.
If Bale does leave the White Hart Lane club, Villas-Boas will turn his attention to Liverpool striker Suarez, report Paul and Tony Hetherington of the Daily Star Sunday.
Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp says he believes Bale has "outgrown" the club and will leave this summer, in an interview with Steve Stammers of the Sunday Mirror.
Villas-Boas is also eyeing a move for Blackpool star Tom Ince before the transfer window closes, according to Wyett of The Sun.
Luis Gustavo, Bayern Munich to Arsenal
4 of 5Arsenal are poised to complete the signing of defensive midfielder Luis Gustavo from Bayern Munich, reports Joe Bernstein of the Mail On Sunday.
The Gunners have agreed on a £14 million deal for the Brazil international, who did not feature in Bayern's first game of the Bundesliga season on Friday.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has brought only French youngster Yaya Sanogo to the club this summer, despite interest in Gonzalo Higuain and Suarez.
But Wenger is refusing to give up on the chase for the Liverpool striker, who has told the Anfield club he wants to leave, according to Bernstein.
Joey Barton, QPR to West Ham United
5 of 5West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce is considering a move for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, reports Alan Oliver of the Sunday People.
Allardyce signed Barton for Newcastle United in June 2007 and is now weighing up the idea of reuniting the player with former Tyneside teammates Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll at Upton Park.
Barton has returned to QPR this summer after a season-long loan with Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1. He has started all three of the Loftus Road club's competitive matches this year.
