Jones and Washington of the Jets: "Show Me the Money!"

Michael TiedemannMay 12, 2009

Thomas Jones and, now, Leon Washington want new contracts for this upcoming season. It has come to the point where it is being reported that both won't be showing up at offseason workouts.

So, what do the Jets do?

They're going to have an inexperienced quarterback playing either way and, if they don't have a reliable running game, then you might as well kiss any hopes of putting points on the board to rest.

Jones, 30, is viewed as the top running back on the team and is owed $900,000 this year. Washington, 26, is the change of pace back and has a base salary of $535,000.

One must assume that Washington is seeking the type of money that Maurice Jones-Drew just got, a four-year extension for $32.8 million and around $17 million of that being guaranteed.

Washington led the NFL with 2,337 all-purpose yards and found the end zone nine times a year ago.

Jones' gripe is that he's too good and means too much to this franchise not to be guaranteed at least a few million. He has a point, but he's 30. This isn't exactly a spring chicken we're talking about.

Either way, Jones is coming off the best year of his career after he finished with 1,312 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. He added another 207 receiving yards and another two trips to the end zone.

The Jets have an option considering they just drafted Shonn Greene in this year's NFL Draft, but we can't expect Greene to have the same impact a Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, or Matt Forte had, can we?

These types of things don't go away. Washington doesn't deserve the type of money Jones-Drew got, just due to the fact that he's not on the field as much as Jones-Drew will be this season.

The organization needs to come to a quick solution. On one hand, these players are under contract and can't afford to give back any money for skipping workouts. On the other, they know the team will suffer without them on the field.
