Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Blues Smart to Continue Pursuit of Wayne Rooney

Benjamin KleinJun 7, 2018

You can’t knock Jose Mourinho for his persistence.

The Chelsea manager has his heart set on landing Manchester United star Wayne Rooney before the transfer window closes, and he’s doing everything in his power to get him. He said a month ago he wasn’t going to make bids for any other players and that the star striker was his lone target this summer, according to BBC.

Thus far, Mourinho has come up short in his bids to land Rooney. But that hasn’t stopped him from trying. Steve Brenner of The Guardian reports that Chelsea will make a third bid for the elite talent after their first two offers were rejected by the Premier League champions.

There’s a chance Chelsea’s third bid will be accepted, though. Brenner writes that it’s understood Rooney is ready to leave Manchester United, meaning the Blues could be the next club he plays for.

To this point, David Moyes has refused to relinquish his prized possession.

Here’s what Mourinho said of the process, per Brenner:

"

We are far away so we are not in England to know every detail but we are doing things the correct way. We made the bid and Manchester United have reacted. Let’s see what happens. But we can’t do more than we are dong now.

We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the players, no contract, absolutely thing. We are doing everything in an ethical way, so let’s see if things change.

There is no time limit. We have our squad or strikers. We have identified the player as one we would like to have with us. We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes.

"

The Chelsea manager knows it’s only a matter of time before Manchester United will have to accept a bid for the striker. It’s only a matter of time before he gets the player he wants so badly.

Moyes is going to have to let Rooney play elsewhere for the upcoming season whether he likes it or not.

But time is of the essence. Time is running out for Chelsea, and the club cannot afford to enter the season with this saga not completely put to rest, as Bleacher Reports’ Tyler Conway recently wrote.

Mourinho knows it can’t continue forever, but he will do whatever it takes “until the last day.”

Money shouldn’t be a big deal for Chelsea; Rooney would be worth every penny. He’s a rare talent who would give the club a massive boost on offense. He would be one of the top scoring threats for the Blues, and he could potentially help the club top Manchester United in the Premier League.

Mourinho is bound to continue his pursuit of Rooney until Manchester United accepts a bid or the season commences. He knows the importance of having a player like Rooney on the pitch each match. Chelsea needs the striker to contend this year, and the club is smart to keep bidding for him.
