Chelsea Transfer Rumours: Blues Are Clever to Arrange Third Bid for Wayne Rooney

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

Jose Mourinho and Chelsea know that they must add a dynamic forward to their squad if they hope to return to the top of the Premier League this season and make another run at the UEFA Champions League title.

All summer long, that potential addition has been disgruntled Manchester Untied superstar Wayne Rooney, who was forced to take a backseat to Robin van Persie last season at Old Trafford.

According to Steve Brenner of The Guardian, Mourinho and the Blues aren't giving up on their pursuit of Rooney, despite resistance from United. Instead, they are preparing a third bid for the veteran striker.

Chelsea has had two bids for Rooney rejected already, but owner Roman Abramovich knows as well as anyone that professional football is a business, and that money changes everything. Therefore, launching a third bid for Rooney is not only perfectly acceptable, but the right move for a contending club perhaps just one piece away from cashing in on multiple titles this season.

In this case, if the Blues aren't bidding, they aren't trying.

Rooney has been with United since 2004 after playing two seasons with Everton. However, last season was one of the 27-year-old's worst since he became the face of the Red Devils almost a decade ago. Injuries limited him, Sir Alex Ferguson left him on the bench at strange points in the season and he would finish the year with just 16 goals in all competitions for the second time in three years.

Stringing together back-to-back dominant seasons has proved challenging for Rooney, who exploded for 34 goals in 2009-10 and 34 more in 2011-12.

Sure, Rooney would have to coexist with the underachieving Fernando Torres at Stamford Bridge, but it's safe to say he would be given more opportunities to shine with a club whose leading goalscorer in league play last season was an aging Frank Lampard.

United have made it clear that they have no intention of sending Rooney to another English club, per Sky Sports, but there's no doubt that the club would be willing to reconsider if the right price comes along.

Rooney would bring more than just a goal-scoring punch to Stamford Bridge. The veteran would provide a presence that would instantly make Chelsea a more feared squad in both the Premier League and Champions League this season.
