Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Luis Suarez Is Worthy of Increased Bid

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

For Arsenal to acquire a superstar like Luis Suarez, they will have to spend some money. It appears this is exactly what will happen to get this process moving.

This saga already featured a £40,000,001 bid from Arsene Wenger that was expected to trigger a release clause in the forward's contract. However, Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor claims that this is not true, according to Alex Hankin of Mirror Football.

Considering Brendan Rodgers' unwillingness to sell at this price, it is obvious that Arsenal will have to be more aggressive.

According to David Woods and Adrian Kajumba of the Daily Star, the club is willing to "smash the English transfer record by offering up to £51m for Luis Suarez."

Obviously, this is a bold move for a player that comes with a lot of risk. He is still serving a 10-match ban for biting an opponent, and he was recently sent away from the first team for being disrespectful, according to David Maddock of Mirror Football.

This type of bid is certainly uncharacteristic of Wenger based on his past actions—although this summer is supposed to be different. He previously stated that he is willing to spend more for a superstar, and the funds are even higher after selling Gervinho.

It would not be surprising to see other players who struggled to see playing time last season being sold before the transfer window ends.

This leaves plenty of opportunity to spend money on a star who would instantly transform the club for the better. He finished second in the league with 23 goals last season, and he did it without much help from his team-mates.

Adding Suarez to the likes of Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla would create one of the top attacks in the Premier League and would instantly turn Arsenal into contenders. Without any new additions, the club would have a hard time finishing in the top four.

With a player that could make this much of an impact, even a lofty sum of £51 million is worth the bid. Arsenal have the money, it is just a question of spending it.

For comparison's sake, Tottenham is trying to sell Gareth Bale for £100 million, according to David Hytner of the Guardian. The midfielder scored two fewer goals and had one fewer assist than Suarez this season and is only about two and a half years younger.

Considering the price, Suarez represents much better value at about half of the cost.

The forward would also bring a great deal of confidence to the players and fans heading into the season. Both have been losing hope after seeing little activity this summer, and things could get even worse if the club fails to get Suarez.

Bringing in a dynamic player would provide an immediate boost to everyone involved and lead to a lot more success.

This transaction needs to get done—and it is worth the cost even at this increased price.
