A Letter to the Arsenal Community

Mohamed Eldin MasriMay 12, 2009

To my beloved Arsenal community.

For the last four years, we have gone trophyless, a feat that even Spurs wasn't victim to.

And now there is a chance that we might break the record of the last time we were trophyless (from 1982 till 1986). Our team's market value is less than what any of the Big Four (or even few of the smaller teams) pay in the summer transfer market.

In other words, in the last four years we have been living in Bizarro World.

Ahhhh, but what is this Bizarro World I speak of? Bizarro World is a famous Comic where everything is in reverse; Earth is called Htrae (Earth spelled backwards), ugly is beautiful, right is wrong, it goes on.

Now, please imagine with me a beautiful place called...I don't know, "Gunners Land" where all the Fabregases and Fabregasas (the female version) live with their Rosickys and Clichys in perfect harmony.

You have enough potential to become the greatest "Land" in the world. Now, imagine you got sucked out of your home and got thrown  into "Red Devilsville," or even, God forbids "Blues Town."

All the Christianos and Christinas, Rooneys and Rooneyas (I can't dare imagine what they look like), Tevez and Tevezas (Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!) are all making fun of you for being yourself.

Everyone around you keeps singing "Glory Glory Man United" (God, I hate that song) and worst of all keep saying that their players are better than the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, and Adams (we all know there is no comparison).

This is actually very close to the daily routine that most of us have been living, every year, we tell ourselves "Next year is our year", but we always get close and then choke.

People say it all started in 2005 after that Russian Leprechaun bought Chelsea and we won the FA Cup; I don't think so.

You see, the next season we were out of the League, out of the FA Cup and alive and well in the Champions League. Most of the Invincibles were together and we were in the Champions League final against Barcelona.

It all started when Lehmann tackled Eto'o, he got a red card, thus forcing Wenger to substitute Almunia for Pires in the 18th minute (the reason Pires left afterwards), then Arsenal played 70 minutes with only 10 men.

Later, Campbell (or Judas as referred to by our less intelligent and less attractive neighbours the Spurs) scored a header, and we were 15 minutes away from the prize that has eluded us for ages.

Then came in Henrik Larsson, a 35-year-old that was playing his last match for Barcelona, made two assists and ended our dreams.

After that Pires left, Campbell left, Cashely Cole left, and Bergkamp retired. A season later, Henry and Ljunberg left as well, and we didn't buy.

Nohhoooo. Not us, I mean why would we, we're only the third richest club on the planet. Even players like Flamini joined us on a free transfer (ironically he left us on a free transfer as well) and all the teams keep increasing the players wages, and we still pay ours like it's the 1980s; then we have all our players leaving us.

Still there is no doubt that we are still able to challenge for top honours, but in order to do so we must  buy players, I mean, what is the point in being the third richest club, Building a new stadium, earning the biggest sponsorship in the history of the premier league and NOT paying our players and spending on new ones?

We don't have to change the entire team, we just need the perfect adjustments.

I love the fact that Wenger cares about us economically but from what I've seen, we might be the safest club financially on the planet.

And if he or the board say they've got no money, I am willing to try and start a campaign and make everyone donate 10 bucks or so to get the players we want.

I'm against the fact the Man Utd's Sir Red Nose payed 30 million on Bulbasaur, but we don't have to spend 30 million to be great, but we NEED to spend.

As always, we'll have to wait for the transfer window to open and see what happens.
