Monty Panesar Reportedly Axed from England Ashes Squad After Urination Scandal

Matt CheethamJun 8, 2018

Monty Panesar's embarrassing 24 hours took a further twist with the England spinner reportedly dropped from the Ashes squad, according to the Daily Express' Giles Sheldrick.

Panesar hit the headlines Wednesday morning after being caught urinating on bouncers outside a nightclub on Monday, as BBC News reported.

However, Sheldrick claims his actions will now see him axed from England's Test squad, presumably ruling him out of this Ashes series and putting his spot on the winter tour in jeopardy.

Sheldrick offers a more detailed account of Panesar's rather shameful actions, quoting a source as saying:

"

The girls didn’t know who he was and kept telling him to go away but he wouldn't.

I recognised him straight away but when he was asked to leave he gave a look that said 'do you know who I am?'

He refused to leave but when the doorman said it was his time to go again, he walked out of his own accord. He seemed to be by himself.

"

Generally seen as an endearing, affable character, these reports offer a contrasting image of Panesar, which adds to the intrigue surrounding the story.

As The Guardian report, his county side are also looking into the matter, and released the following statement (via BBC News):

"

Sussex County Cricket Club can confirm that an incident took place involving Monty Panesar in the early hours of Monday August 5. The matter is under full investigation and the club will make no further comment at this stage.

"

While Panesar would have been unlikely to play in the seamer-friendly conditions at Durham, the Oval would have perhaps offered him another chance to return to the England lineup.

It seems that won't be an option now, and having struggled to make an impact with England in New Zealand, his squad place appears under more threat than ever before.

James Tredwell's impressive form at the ICC Champions Trophy and the emergence of young spinner Simon Kerrigan has already put pressure on Panesar.

He's endured an ordinary season at county level, taking just 23 wickets at an average of over 40, and this series of unfortunate headlines are only going to further delay any return to the international stage.
