WWE Interested in Signing Ric Flair Again

Sharon GlencrossJun 8, 2018

Could Ric Flair be on the verge of returning to WWE?

Flair has made sporadic, well-received appearances for the company since leaving Impact Wrestling in May 2012, but is a more permanent position in the cards?

Interestingly, in this week's (subscribers only) Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer mentions that WWE is seriously looking into bringing back the star:

There are reports of the company being in talks about signing Flair to a new deal. Things are pretty sensitive since nobody has confirmed it but something is happening. The company envisions a situation where they can use him for P.R. purposes (the role he had when he decided to leave the company in 2008 and go out on his own) and heavily merchandise him as well because heโ€™s Ric Flair and has the huge name identity.

"

No doubt many fans would be keen to see Flair back with the company, particularly if he were utilized in an on-screen role. If nothing else, Flair remains a great character who can lively up even the dullest Raw.ย

However, as much as the veteran would bring to television, is this truly the right thing for both parties?

Flair has had a challenging 2013, which is putting it mildly.

Tragically, his beloved son Reid passed away in Marchโ€”later revealed to be from a drug overdoseโ€”in Charlotte, North Carolina.ย The Hall of Famer's acrimonious split with Jacqueline Beems, his fourth wife, has also been in and out of TMZ and the rest of the gossip blogs.

His legal problems have resurfaced too. As the Los Angeles Times notes, there was a warrant out for his arrest over his refusal to pay Beems the agreed-upon amount of alimony in June.

Even by celebrity standards, this is one messy divorce that shows no sign of being sorted out amicably anytime soon.

Is Flair emotionally ready to return to the spotlight? And does WWE, a company that cares greatly about its public image, want to deal with all the hassle the troubled Flair inevitably brings with him?
