Manchester United Transfer News: Club Should Be Aggressive for Marouane Fellaini
While the transfer window has not gone according to plan for Manchester United, the club can still get better by adding Marouane Fellaini before the start of the season.
According to John Cross of Mirror Football, the Everton midfielder is the new target to strengthen the midfield after failing to acquire Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona. The report states that Fellaini has a £23.5 million buyout clause if he can move to a Champions League club.
This represents a huge advantage for Manchester United as the defending EPL champions compared to Everton, who will not compete in any European competitions next season.
However, his current club will not let him go too easily. Sky Sports quotes manager Roberto Martinez, who claims there has not been any activity yet:
"There are no bids. When you read that someone is interested in someone, it doesn't mean there is a bid on the table. Marouane has been working really hard.
[...]
It is speculation in the media and you'll never stop that. I've said from day one as a manager you only concentrate on working hard. I don't mind having my players grabbing headlines. That's a good story because it means they've been doing well and performing well.
"
It is certainly true that Fellaini has been playing well. The midfielder is not as creative offensively as Fabregas, but he still finished with 11 goals and five assists last season in Premier League play.
Additionally, he is a great tackler against opposing attacks and can also be a huge threat in the air. These two skills would help complement the current roster of players at United by providing abilities that the club currently lacks.
His size and skill set also allow him to play further back on the pitch if needed into more of a holding midfielder role. This versatility would certainly help new manager David Moyes in his first year with the club.
The problem is that there has not yet been a formal bid, and Everton is not looking forward to selling the player. The Belgian national is the type of player who will help the mid-table club get into the Europa League or Champions League next season.
Based on the club's inability to finalize transfers throughout the summer, there is reason to be concerned that this move would get done either.
Still, this is a move that must be completed.
According to ESPN, Moyes remains confident that his side will improve before the start of the year while saying, "There will be reinforcements - they will come and we will get them."
This has been a theme throughout the summer, and to this point he has come up empty. The inability to bring in talent will cause people to question his job before he even coaches his first EPL match.
To make matters worse, Wayne Rooney appears ready to hand in a transfer request, according to Daniel Taylor of the Guardian.
If United is unable to bring in talent and loses one of the top players in the league, it is hard to have faith in the remainder of the season.
This is what makes the Fellaini transfer so important. He is a skillful player who will help the squad on the pitch, and it would remove many doubts about the future.
Manchester United must be aggressive by making a large enough bid to bring him to Old Trafford. They cannot afford to miss out on another opportunity like this.
