Liverpool Transfer News: Keeping Daniel Agger Is Great Sign for Reds

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

Daniel Agger is at the peak of his powers. The veteran defender is coming off another solid season for Liverpool and has been linked to powerhouse Barcelona throughout the summer. He has the talent to make the jump, but seems perfectly content at Anfield.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers praised that loyalty amid transfer interest as he deals with another high-profile player in Luis Suarez, who's seeking an escape route. ESPN reports the boss is confident Agger will stay despite the Barca talk.

"

If we're talking about loyalty, he was one of the first players that I spoke to when I became the manager. At the time, there were a number of big clubs looking to sign Daniel.

But he gave me his word that for as long as I wanted him to be at Liverpool, he would be at Liverpool. He has never swayed from that.

He has an unswerving commitment to Liverpool which is so refreshing. His loyalty to the club is incredible.

The 28-year-old Danish international has been with Liverpool for nearly a decade. Over that time, he's developed into one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders and taken on a prominent role within the club's back line.

If the Reds are going to rebound, they need players like him to lead the way. They can't afford to watch valuable pieces walk out the door every summer and expect to keep pace with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

The outside reputation of a club is important. That's why in a summer where Suarez's transfer saga has dominated the headlines, it's crucial for Rodgers to showcase players like Agger, who remained committed to the Anfield cause.

Above all else, it shows there are still really good players willing to stay with the Reds despite some disappointing seasons recently. It's going to take a concerted effort to get back inside the top four consistently, but that doesn't mean every star wants to jump ship.

Moving forward, Rodgers knows the path to success is allowing younger players to grow as a unit. They aren't going to outbid big-spending clubs on a consistent basis, so they have to focus on players who are still moving toward peak value.

It's a process that's already underway with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Fabio Borini and Sebastian Coates, among others. And it's just as important to have players like Agger and Steven Gerrard to show the way for the next wave of Liverpool stars.

By remaining loyal, Agger is sending a message that while there might be opportunities with other clubs, including marquee ones like Barcelona, it's possible to build a legacy at Liverpool. Rodgers has to hope the other players will take note as they begin to jell together.

Expectations for Liverpool should remain realistic ahead of the new campaign, especially if Suarez eventually exits. Challenging the top clubs under that scenario would take a miracle as the Reds continue to rebuild.

But the fact a player like Agger remains committed to the club is a terrific sign.
