Don't Trade Braylon Edwards

Erin McLaughlinMay 11, 2009

Trade rumors involving Braylon Edwards have run rampant this offseason.

The Giants and Eagles were the main teams involved. Recently the Jets have been mentioned. Frankly, I am amazed that his hometown Lions haven't surfaced in any trade rumors.

My suggestion to Eric Mangini and George Kokinis aka Mankok — is to keep him. The reason is that he is going into a contract year. Edwards has shown that when he wants to be, he can be amazing on the field. He will be a free agent after the season so the Browns will get the best Braylon Edwards has. As we know, that is quite good.

Currently, he is known most for dropping passes in spite of many of the great catches he has. He will want to change that reputation.

Looking at the wide reciever position in Cleveland, Edwards is clearly the best. Donte Stallworth who was a bust anyway probably won't be back due to legal trouble. David Patten is a good second or third option but is clearly not a primary receiver. The other guy is Mike Furrey.  Who is Mike Furrey?

Brian Robiskie and Mohahmed Massaquoi do have great potential. Potential is short for you haven't done anything yet. Therefore keeping Edwards will allow the coaches work with thes guys in practice and ease them into games. That should take some of the pressure off of them.

If at the end of the season, Mankok is happy with his two prospects they can let Edwards go. If not they can franchise him. Either way I do expect is a big year from Edwards. The reason is quite simple. It's a contract year.
