Week 23 MLS Power Rankings

0 of 20

In a week dominated by ownership changes, big-time transfers and a star-studded All-Star Game, fans of Major League Soccer already had plenty of things to talk about.

If you add in the play on the pitch this weekend, fans of the league will not run short on watercooler discussion topics this week.

During the action on the pitch, last week's top two clubs failed to record a victory.

With Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake leaving the door wide open, another club has soared to the top of the B/R MLS Power Rankings.

Read on to see who was crowned the top club in MLS this week by our experts.

1 of 20

Every week, our MLS experts will rank each team from one to 19.

Each team will be given a point total for its specific ranking.

For example, the team that is ranked No. 1 is given 19 points, while the last-place team receives just one point.

We will compile the votes each week, and the team with the highest point total will be placed atop the power rankings.

19. Chivas USA

2 of 20

    Points: 7

    Last Week's Ranking: 18

Week 23 Result: Loss to San Jose, 2-0.

Chivas USA once again suffered defeat on Saturday.

This week's disappointing result also came with a side of discipline as Carlos Bocanegra was sent off for a strong tackle on Shea Salinas.

18. D.C. United

3 of 20

    Points: 8

    Last Week's Ranking: 19

Week 23 Result: Win over Montreal, 3-1.

D.C. United surprised all of us with a victory over playoff-bound Montreal.

The club's duo of midseason acquisitions, Luis Silva and Conor Doyle, both scored in the victory.

17. Toronto FC

4 of 20

    Points: 17

    Last Week's Ranking: 17

Week 23 Result: Win over New England, 1-0.

Matias Laba's second-minute strike against the Revolution was enough to extend the unbeaten run of Toronto FC to three matches.

The win by the Reds also boosted them above 20 points for the first time this season.

16. Columbus Crew

5 of 20

    Points: 18

    Last Week's Ranking: 16

Week 23 Result: Loss to Houston, 3-1.

The Crew failed to deliver the same excitement on Saturday that was had at the club's new ownership announcement earlier in the week.

Robert Warzycha's club have now lost six of their last seven matches and one has to assume a change in management is right around the corner.

15. San Jose Earthquakes

6 of 20

    Points: 31

    Last Week's Ranking: 14

Week 23 Result: Win over Chivas USA, 2-0.

Who would have thought that a club with 30 points at this point in the season would be sitting in eighth place in their respective conference?

That is exactly the case for San Jose after they benefited from the return of Chris Wondolowski, who scored twice in Saturday's win over Chivas USA.

While they do sit in eighth place in the wild, wild West, the Earthquakes are just three points out of a playoff position.

14. New England Revolution

7 of 20

    Points: 36

    Last Week's Ranking: 11

Week 23 Result: Loss to Toronto, 1-0.

Just as they were beginning to gain plenty of momentum in their playoff push, the New England Revolution fell flat against Toronto FC on Sunday.

The loss combined with Houston's win dropped the Revs out of the fifth and final Eastern Conference playoff position for the time being.

13. Chicago Fire

8 of 20

    Points:  37

    Last Week's Ranking: 15

Week 23 Result: Win over Philadelphia, 2-1.

Mike Magee's case for MLS MVP got even stronger on Saturday night at PPL Park.

The league's leading scorer found the back of the net for the 14th time this season as the Fire inched closer into playoff contention.

Magee has now scored in four of the last five matches for the Fire.

12. FC Dallas

9 of 20

    Points: 40

    Last Week's Ranking: 12

Week 23 Result: Loss to Seattle, 3-0.

The FC Dallas landslide continued on Saturday in Seattle.

Schellas Hyndman's club has failed to win a match since May 25, which is a span of nine matches.

11. Seattle Sounders

10 of 20

    Points: 47

    Last Week's Ranking: 13

Week 23 Result: Win over FC Dallas, 3-0.

If these power rankings were decided by off-field theatrics alone, Seattle would have blown away the competition this week.

The pulsating excitement from the Clint Dempsey signing carried over into Saturday's match against FC Dallas.

It was only fitting that the first two goalscorers of the match on a night like Saturday were the two stars of the club, Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson.

10. Montreal Impact

11 of 20

    Points: 55

    Last Week's Ranking: 6

    Week 23 Result: Loss to D.C., 3-1.

The Impact put up a dud of a result at RFK Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite the loss, Montreal is still in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with many thanks due to their amazing start to the season.

9. Philadelphia Union

12 of 20

    Points: 56

    Last Week's Ranking: 5

Week 23 Result: Loss to Chicago, 2-1.

Just as we were all starting to believe in the Union, they failed to beat a team in the Fire that they should have easily handled at home.

Instead of boosting themselves into second place in the Eastern Conference, John Hackworth's side are in fourth place and are right in the middle of a playoff fight.

8. Los Angeles Galaxy

13 of 20

    Points: 57

    Last Week's Ranking: 7

Week 23 Result: No Match Played

With the week off from league play, the Galaxy took part in the International Champions Cup and played against the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

In what could be described as a major upset, the Galaxy defeated Juventus on Saturday night.

7. Vancouver Whitecaps

14 of 20

    Points: 59

    Last Week's Ranking: T-9

Week 23 Result: Draw with Portland, 1-1.

Vancouver broke their two-match losing streak in their Cascadia Cup draw with the Portland on Saturday.

Jordan Harvey's 69th-minute header was enough to secure a valuable point in the Western Conference playoff race for the Whitecaps.

6. Houston Dynamo

15 of 20

    Points: 66

    Last Week's Ranking: T-9

Week 23 Result: Win over Columbus, 3-1.

The Dynamo cruised back into the fifth playoff spot in the East with a dominant win over the Columbus Crew.

In the win, the suddenly on fire Cam Weaver scored his second goal in two matches after going goalless over the last two years.

5. Colorado Rapids

16 of 20

    Points: 69

    Last Week's Ranking: 8

Week 23 Result: Draw with Real Salt Lake, 2-2.

With the league's longest unbeaten streak already in hand, Colorado also took home the Rocky Mountain Cup on Saturday for the first time in seven years.

Jaime Castrillon was the player who salvaged both for the Rapids with his 70th minute equalizing header.

The Rapids will look to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches against Chivas USA on Sunday.

4. Sporting Kansas City

17 of 20

    Points: 81

    Last Week's Ranking: 2

Week 23 Result: Loss to New York, 3-2.

Sporting's big two-week Eastern Conference litmus test ended in a total failure.

A week after losing to Montreal at the death, Peter Vermes' club lost to the Red Bulls at home on Saturday.

Thanks to their two-match slide, Sporting have lost the lead in the Eastern Conference standings to New York.

3. Portland Timbers

18 of 20

    Points: 82

    Last Week's Ranking: 4

Week 23 Result: Draw with Vancouver, 1-1.

It was a rough week to be a Timbers fan.

First, the Timbers' position atop the allocation order was disregarded in the Clint Dempsey sweepstakes.

Then, Caleb Porter's club could only get a single point out of their home Cascadia Cup match with Vancouver.

2. Real Salt Lake

19 of 20

    Points: 90

    Last Week's Ranking: 1

Week 23 Result: Draw with Colorado, 2-2.

Real Salt Lake handed over the Rocky Mountain Cup to Colorado for the first time in seven years after their draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday.

Despite losing their local rivalry trophy, RSL did hold on to their leads in the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings.

1. New York Red Bulls

20 of 20

    Points: 92

    Last Week's Ranking: 3

Week 23 Result: Win over Sporting, 3-2.

The trend of high-scoring matches against the league's best continued for the Red Bulls on Saturday.

This week, Mike Petke's club took over Sporting Park and the Eastern Conference standings with a win over Sporting Kansas City.

All of a sudden, the Red Bulls are tied on points in the Supporters' Shield race with Real Salt Lake as well.
