The Cowboys Need to Make Their Secondary Primary This Summer

Brandon BarnesMay 11, 2009

Take a look at the picture above. This is one of the glaring former members of the Cowboys that could come back to haunt this Cowboys Defensive Secondary.  Affectionately nicknamed "Biscuit" by head coach Bill Parcells, he is a player to be reckoned with when he is on the field.

Unfortunately, Roy Williams requested to be released and is now with the Cincinnati Bengals due to not being a good fit with the current coaching staff.  The Cowboy Secondary has consistently been a problem and has not gotten better under the tutelage of Wade Phillips.  While Williams has not been very productive since 2005, he is a hustler.

Let me repeat that: a hustler. He is not a pretty boy or one to take the spotlight.  He was only thrown in the spotlight for his style of play of which players and the commissioner took offense. That's just his hustle. I like the philosophy of bringing 'em down any way possible. If there is hair there, grab that too. That is the mentality that he brought to the Cowboys' secondary.

Sure he was injured for most of last season, but his presence meant something. Bringing in Dave Campo in 2008 as the Defensive Secondary coach is not going to help matters.  Why in the world would the Cowboys bring in a coach that already has proven himself as not a good fit for the Cowboys persona (Going 5-11 his last year). Why is it that we constantly hire these coaches that seem to exasperate who the Cowboys truly are?

The answer: Jerry Jones. My only hope is this rookie, Michael Hamlin, who they bring in from Clemson can bring some fire to the secondary that will lift the Cowboys up and not down when it counts in the playoffs.

The Cowboys at this time last year were predicted to have one of the best secondaries out there and we all know how that worked out. I'm not seeing a lot being done this summer and that could prove to be the Achilles heel for the second year in a row.
