Liverpool Transfer News: Striker Diego Costa Would Improve the Reds' Offense
After disappointing last season in the English Premier League, Liverpool are looking to improve their offense by going after Brazilian striker Diego Costa.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have bid more than £20 million for the Atletico Madrid forward.
"Liverpool have bid in excess of £20m for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, according to Sky Sports sources.
The offer is believed to have triggered a release clause in the Brazil international's contract...
Costa, a powerful 6'2" striker, would become the fourth most expensive signing in Liverpool's history after Andy Carroll (£35m), Fernando Torres (£26m) and Luis Suarez (£22.8m).
"
It's a big offer for a player like Costa, but he is a good attacking threat. He scored 10 goals and added seven assists in La Liga last season.
Mike Whalley of ESPN.com reported that Luis Suarez's future with the club is up in the air, so Costa would be a good consolation prize if Liverpool lost their star.
Suarez scored 23 goals in the EPL last season, as well as five assists. He would be tough to replace, but the club may eventually sell him for a good return.
The Reds are already a decent attacking side, but a lot of that talent comes from Suarez. Costa wouldn't be able to replace Suarez, but the 24-year-old would at least add depth.
Liverpool scored the fourth-most goals in the EPL last season, and they weren't far behind Chelsea for the second-most. However, Manchester United were far ahead of every other club. There can never be too much attacking talent at a club in arguably the toughest league in the world.
Costa uses his size to get through defenses. He is aggressive and makes the most of his power. He also has good speed, and there is plenty of room to improve as he plays more games.
One of the biggest concerns with Costa is his tendency to get booked. He received 11 yellow cards in 24 La Liga matches last year.
But Costa has the ability to succeed at Anfield. It wouldn't be a cheap transfer, but nor is it an outrageous price.
Even if the Reds manage to keep hold of Suarez, Costa would still be a good addition. Indeed, Liverpool fans should be excited by the prospect of having Suarez, Costa and Daniel Sturridge at Anfield.
