Red Sox Left Fielder Jonny Gomes Pulls off Unique Double Play in 15th Inning

Doug MeadJun 8, 2018

Double plays occur every day in Major League Baseball. But it's rare indeed when an outfielder pulls off an unassisted double play.

That's exactly what Boston Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes did on Wednesday.

In the top of the 15th inning with the scored tied at 4-4, the Seattle Mariners put runners on first and second with one out. Michael Saunders strode to the plate and ripped a sinking line drive to left field.

Unfortunately for Saunders, Gomes got in the way.

The play preserved the 4-4 tie, and the Sox would go on to finally win in the bottom of the 15th, 5-4, on a Stephen Drew walk-off single.

Ironically, Saunders had just completed an outstanding play of his own, firing a bullet from center field to nail Sox third baseman Brandon Snyder at the plate to complete a double play. It was the 21st time the Sox had run into an out at home, by far the most in the American League.

But Gomes one-upped Saunders. He got two outs all on his own.

After Gomes' unique feat, he found himself plenty of admirers of Twitter.

Gomes has been a solid addition for the Red Sox, contributing eight home runs with 26 RBI, including this walk-off capped off by a punt NFL Pro Bowler Ray Guy would appreciate.

It was a night that featured over five hours of baseball and certainly had a bit of everything, and Gomes at least gave fans a little extra for their long night.
