Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Would Be Foolish to Sell David Luiz to Barcelona
Barcelona is interested in buying Chelsea's David Luiz this summer, according to Gabriel Sans of the Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, via ESPN FC's Duncan McMath.
The Blues would be foolish to sell.
Bayern Munich reportedly showed interest in the 26-year-old recently, but manager Pep Guardiola shot down the rumors, per ESPN FC.
Now, perhaps Barcelona is seeing a window of opportunity.
According to McMath, Barca would likely have to pay around €30 million for a bid on Luiz to even be considered. However, even at that price, the versatile Brazilian is too important to the Blues for the club to sell him.
Chelsea may have Branislav Ivanovic, a fantastic player, but Gary Cahill and John Terry alone wouldn't be enough to make up for the loss of Luiz, especially if the club is seriously considering vying for the Champions League trophy moving forward.
Luiz may not be perfect.
Sometimes he can take risks and expose the Blues defense. All told, he's still one of the best centre backs in the world. Not only that, he's played well as both a central defender and a defensive midfielder.
The sale of Luiz would be even more concerning for Chelsea fans given the club hasn't been linked to any big names at centre back. Unless the Blues replaced Luiz with a top-flight player, a move would basically be admitting to fans that the club wasn't serious about contending for the Champions League.
It would frankly be shocking if Chelsea sold one of its top players a month before the transfer window ended. Blues fans can only hope that the club doesn't listen to Barcelona's offer and that the defending La Liga champions are simply spinning its wheels.
I cannot even imagine what the reception would be like for manager Jose Mourinho if he dealt Luiz in his first summer back at Stamford Bridge.
