Manchester United Transfer News: Luka Modric Would Be Solid Addition for Club

Ryan RudnanskyJun 4, 2018

After Manchester United saw their second bid for Cesc Fabregas reportedly turned down, the Red Devils are prepared to offer £25 million for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to Matt Hughes and James Ducker of the Times.

The £30 million offer for Fabregas apparently wasn't enough for Barcelona, according to the Daily Mail, so United appear to be turning their attention elsewhere.

Modric would be a nice consolation prize.

In 33 games for Real Madrid in La Liga last season (25 starts), Modric posted three goals and three assists.

Modric's numbers don't reflect the 27-year-old's skill level, though. He was bought by Madrid for £33 million last August. He possesses excellent vision, dribbling and passing skills, just as dangerous sending in through balls as he is lofting the ball over the defense.

United won the Premier League last season, beating out Manchester City by 11 points and scoring a league-high 86 goals while allowing a respectable 43 goals. Adding Modric would make the club even more dangerous.

Obviously, United would love to add Fabregas, who notched 11 goals and 11 assists in 32 games (30 starts) last season.

But that doesn't appear to be a realistic possibility right now, and United are right to look in another direction. While the transfer window is still open for another month, it's ideal to add a player earlier so the team can develop some chemistry before the campaign.

United have bid a lot for Fabregas, only to be turned down. At this point, it's best to move to more available targets.

Modric is not only a very talented player, he's played multiple positions, displaying the versatility needed if United manager David Moyes looks to switch things up.

United have struck out on a lot of top players this summer, but there is still hope to add a big name. Modric may not compare to some of United's other top targets during the transfer window, but he's still a fine player. He would add more firepower to the EPL defending champions.
