Predicting Chelsea's Top Goalscorers for Next Season

Joe KrishnanJun 8, 2018

They may not always win, but rarely does a game go by without a Chelsea goal.

The Blues scored 75 in the Premier League last season in the 38-game campaignโ€”a ratio of almost two goals a game on averageโ€”and it shows how the West London outfit tend to focus on attacking as the best method of victory.

And it's not just the strikers who find the net, with Gary Cahill and John Terry each scoring six a piece in the previous campaign.

With the arrivals of Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel, there's certainly no doubt that the new recruits can chip in with a few goals between them as well as their teammates.

Competition for places in the Chelsea side is heating up under Jose Mourinho, especially between the forwards. But you may be shocked to discover that it was Fernando Torres who finished top of the pile with 23 goals in all competitions last season.ย

And today, we go about predicting who will lead the goalscoring standings for the 2013-14 season at Stamford Bridge. Be sure to let us know your thoughts at the bottom of the page.

5. Frank Lampard

1 of 5

When you're the club's all-time goalscorer, it's natural for expectations to be slightly exaggerated.

But with Frank Lampard, it's more of a reverse. The pundits insist he won't hit the 20-goal barrier or even the 10-goal mark, yet in the period between 2005-2010, he managed five consecutive seasons with more than 20 goals in all competitions.

For a midfielder, that is simply phenomenal. What's more so is that in 608 games for Chelsea, Lampard has scored a whopping 203 goals, with 141 coming in the Premier League.ย

He may have turned 35 in June, but the veteran midfielder is slowly entering the 'evergreen' phase which has seen the likes of Ryan Giggs and Javier Zanetti play near to the age of 40.

With 15 Premier League goals last season, it's unlikely that he will match the same total as Jose Mourinho seeks to reduce Chelsea's reliance on the England international, but there's no doubt Lampard will reach double figures for the 11th season in a row.

4. Juan Mata

2 of 5

There aren't too many players with as much intelligence, quality and creativity as Juan Mata, and while his role tends to be based on helping his teammates score goals, the Spaniard isn't the worst finisher in the world either.

Mata scored 20 goals last season, which was the second-highest among the whole Chelsea squad last season. As well as his impressive scoring record, he made 35 goals for his teammates in the 64 games he took part in.

The former Valencia man has become an integral part of the Chelsea team throughout the past two years, and despite rumors linking him with a move to Barcelona, Mata insists he is happy at Stamford Bridge, per The Guardian.

Jose Mourinho also confirmed Mata has a role to play, although hinted his new role could be on the right-side of midfield, per ESPN.ย

His scoring form is likely to take a hit as a result, perhaps lowering his target slightly to 15 goals, but the selflessness in Mata's play means that won't matter as long as Chelsea are successful.

3. Andre Schurrle

3 of 5

An ยฃ18 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen, big things are expected from Germany international Andre Schurrle this season.

A two-year pursuit of the highly-rated forward finally ended when Jose Mourinho gave the green light to the signing of the former Mainz striker. ย

After scoring 14 goals, which helped Bayer Leverkusen secure Champions League qualification for next season, Schurrle will be looking to repeat or to even emulate his impressive form for the Premier League side.

Of course, the 22-year-old may have a bit of difficulty in doing so, given that his role in the side is more likely to be rotational rather than regular on the left side of midfield.

But if he achieved more than 15 goals in his debut campaign, it would mark a successful season for the Blues' new boy.ย

2. Fernando Torres

4 of 5

There's no arguing the fact that 15 Premier League goals in two and a half seasons from a ยฃ50 million striker is not good enough. And nobody knows that more than the man himself: Fernando Torres.

But what is refreshing about the former Liverpool striker is that he is always trying to improve, and there are no targets or limits to what he can do as he is always striving to build on his success.

The fact that he doubled his 2011-12 total of 11 goals with 22 last season suggests the 29-year-old has finally settled at Stamford Bridge, and the 106-cap Spain international will be hoping new coach Jose Mourinho takes note of that statistic.

With the squad improving and one of the best managers in the world behind him, Torres should enjoy a fruitful season in front of goal, although the pressure to perform has never been greater with Romelu Lukaku breathing down his neck.

Expecting more than 10 Premier League goals, based on his current rate of improvement, is not too far-fetched. Providing he hits form early and maintains a first team spot, he could be challenging for the Premier League golden boot.

1. Romelu Lukaku

5 of 5

Chelsea have been looking for the new Didier Drogba ever since the Ivorian left for Shanghai Shenhua in 2012. Now at Galatasaray, a return looks unlikely for the veteran, at least on the pitch anyway.

But why look to bring back something from the past when there's arguably a better model ready to be unleashed?

Romelu Lukaku arrived at Chelsea in 2011 for an ยฃ18 million fee from boyhood club Anderlecht, with a big reputation and the desire to hit the ground running. But no goals in his 12 appearances showed he still had a lot of learning to do, and was loaned out to West Brom last season.

There, he scored 17 Premier League goals, including a stunning hat-trick against Manchester United and proved he is ready to do the business for Chelsea.ย

With power, pace and terrific work rate, Lukaku is the striker that Jose Mourinho has been looking for, and with four goals in three games on tour in Asia, he looks to be first-choice.ย

If that is the case, the young Belgian may be able to reach the coveted 20-goal mark in the Premier League.ย
