Figuring Tennis Out with Figures of Speeches

Rohini IyerMay 10, 2009

Figures of Speech have always been a tricky concept for me and since I was tired of getting confunded and befuddled with most of them, I decided to trick these muddling words by equating tennis with some of the concocted tricky blighters.

Thus I made an assortment of 10 such Figure of Speeches relating them with 10 such tennis players or happenings and tried to match them as accurately as possible. Given below is the same alphabetically:

1. Anti-Climax: Roland Garros 2008. After building all the hype and sweet nervous tension, Roger Federer's performance in the 2008 French Open is the best example of being drastically Anti-Climatic. He was going, going and gone: From the first game to the last! [Not a desirable anti-climax to be envisioning about, though!]

2. Apostrophe: Oh Marat Safin's lady luck, where arst Thou?? Ditching him at the twilight of his career, it ain't a lady luck like deliverance!!

3. Cacophony: Sounds that Roger Federer's fans express these days [myself included] when he loses the most easiest of games or when the fans try to explain to his seeming deaf ears about getting a coach!

4. Climax: The ongoing pressure building about Roger Federer's eclipsing of Pete Sampras's record: Every slam final adds to the bonfire of acutely wrought climax-like situation or to mention another scenario, what Nole and Murray are doing to the current rankings getting closer and closer to the "Second best in the World" tag.

5. Metaphor: Just one sentence: Ivo Karlovic is a Goliath [at least physically] on the tennis court.

6. Onomatopoeia: "Grummhp!!" Maria Sharapova's grunts which are missing action these days....

7. Paradox: Marat Safin is a very consistent player with apparent traits of varying inconsistencies in his playing career.

8. Repetition: Includes usage of repetitive words in a given sentence, such as: Wimbledon ['76-'80: Bjorn Borg; '03-'07: Roger Federer]; Roland Garros ['05-'08: Rafa Nadal]...this is just to quote a few examples [Can also be taken as Metonymy: Part of the whole or even as Synecdoche: Whole of the part].

9. Rhetorical Question: Well, this is fairly easy. A question to which the answer is implied: Will Roger Federer ever win a French Open? Frequently queried and perhaps the best example to quote [Prove the world otherwise Roger, make rhetoric as an antithesis]!

10. Simile: Indirect comparison as opposed to "Metaphor" being directly comparative: Rafa Nadal is like a Matador in the Parisian Red Clay, charging  at his opponents representing the bulls!
