MLB Trade Rumors: Latest Info on Michael Young, Jake Peavy and Others

Brian MaziqueJul 28, 2013

The Philadelphia Phillies should be cutting their losses after dropping their last seven games. The team has a good number of players that could bring valuable minor league assets from contenders.

Michael Young is one of those players, and per Jayson Stark of ESPN, the Phillies have discussed a deal with Young's former team, the Texas Rangers. Stark reports talks are in an exploratory stage, but the Rangers would like to add another bat for the stretch run.

Young is the Rangers' all-time hit leader, and he's still has some effectiveness left at 36 years old. Young could give the Rangers at-bats at third base as well as at designated hitter.

The Phillies are also listening to offers for Cliff Lee. The durable and postseason-tested lefty has generated interest from multiple teams, per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

There are several teams in need of depth in the starting rotation. Lee's 7-3 record with an ERA of 2.52 in the playoffs makes him an attractive target for contenders.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.'s phone will likely be ringing a lot over the next few weeks, but he isn't alone. Here's a look at the latest buzz on a few other veterans drawing interest as we head into August.

Jake Peavy and Ervin Santana

The search for more arms will likely include the Chicago White Sox's Jake Peavy and Kansas City Royals' hurler Ervin Santana.

Per Mark Bowman of MLB.com, the Atlanta Braves are still evaluating both, but may have interest in finding help for their bullpen.

With Tim Hudson done for the year, the Braves would be wise to look to fill his spot in the rotation with a veteran. Santana has had a better year than Peavy, but neither has been especially good in the postseason.

Even if he only provides a few quality starts during the regular season, acquiring Santana may be worth it if the price is right.

The White Sox Are Clearly in Sell Mode

Peavy isn't the only notable White Sox player being made available. Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweets that Peavy, Alex Rios, Alexei Ramirez and Matt Lindstrom are apparently being dangled for contending teams.

There is a little bit of everything available in that litter of players: a starting pitcher in Peavy, an outfielder in Rios, an infielder in Ramirez and a relief pitcher in Lindstrom.

All four players could help a contender down the stretch. Rios has a no-trade clause, so moving him could be the most difficult. If you're ranking the available White Sox players on potential impact down the stretch, Rios is likely at the top of the list, followed by Ramirez, Peavy (who is still a bit overrated) and then Lindstrom.

Stay tuned as more information about potential moves surface seemingly by the hour.
