Manchester United ease past lacklustre City

Manchester United 2 - Manchester City 0 (Premier League, May 10, 2009) Cristiano Ronaldo’s wonderful recent form continued against City in the derby, the United number 7 saw his free-kick deflect off Nigel de Jong and beat Shay Given after 18 minutes. Just before the break United scored a killer second, Berbatov combined with Carlos Tevez and, after shifting the ball out of his feet, the Argentine curled in the second off the post. A more subdued second half allowed the cameramen more time to focus on other things, including the Carlos Tevez bum-wiggle and a mouse running across the Old Trafford turf. Another talking point of the second half was the sulky adolescent behaviour of Cristiano Ronaldo after Sir Alex subbed the goalscorer.

In the so-called “Losers Final,” Arsenal looked threatening early doors as Theo Walcott forced Cech into a seventh minute save, before Walcott shot narrowly wide after being teed up by Diaby ten minutes later. Alexander Song was the next young Gun to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy, and Arsenal came to rue their missed chances as Alex headed home a Drogba free-kick off the underside of the bar. Matters worsened for Arsenal when Nicolas Anelka cracked a swerving shot past Fabianski in the 39th minute.

An Esteban Granero penalty in the 26th minute gave Getafe the lead over Osasuna at home.

Chievo 2 - Inter Milan 2 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) Inter took a second minute lead at Chievo after forgotten-man Hernan Crespo was on hand to score a rebound. But the relegation-threatened Flying Donkeys drew level on midway through the half, Michele Marcolini reeling off a stunning 25-yard rocket that stayed low and flat on it’s way into the net. “Super” Mario Balotelli scored a brilliant, powerful half-volley into the near post to restore Inter’s lead in the second half. But once again Chievo hit back quickly, Luciano equalising just six minutes later for the hosts with a header.

Atalanta 1 - Genoa 1 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) Jaime Valdes fired Atalanta into a ninth minute lead at home to Genoa. Domenico Criscito earned Genoa a point with an injury time leveller after patient build-up from the visitors.

Catania 0 - Fiorentina 2 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) A fine 20-yard shot from Stevan Jovetic fired Fiorentina ahead at Catania. A defensive mistake from Sciacca allowed Massimo Gobbi to steal the ball and play-in an unmarked Luciano Zauri inside the area, whose right-footed strike beat Kosicky for number two.

Cagliari 2 - Roma 2 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) A well-placed header from Cagliari’s Alessandro Matri gave the hosts the advantage over Roma. Robert Acquafresca doubled the hosts’ lead after the break, only for Roma talisman Francesco Totti to score in the 63rd minute, with Simone Perrotta finding the top corner six minutes later, to earn the Giallorossi a share of the spoils.

Lecce 1 - Napoli 1 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) Inacio Pia slipped Napoli in the lead midway through the first half before Andrea Zanchetta drew Lecce level with a penalty on the stroke of halftime. (First half highlights here.)

Torino 1- Bologna 1 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) The massive six-pointer between fourth-bottom Torino and third-bottom Bologna ended in an unhelpful stalemate, Andrea Rosina gave the hosts the lead with a 37th minute penalty but Marco Di Vaio levelled with a penalty three minutes from time.

Siena 1 - Palermo 0 (Serie A, May 10, 2009) After a goalless first half (highlights here), Emanuele Calaio claimed a crucial three points for Siena by scoring the winner on the hour.

Sick of the sight of each other, Werder met Hamburg for the third time in a just over week and it was the hosts who struck first as Hugo Almeida started and finished a move to score after 34 minutes.

AZ Alkmaar 3 - Heerenveen 1 (Eredivise, May 10, 2009) Mounir El Hamdaoui rifled a terrific shot into the roof of the net to give champions AZ a 13th minute lead over Heerenveen. Moussa Dembele crashed in number two on the stroke of halftime with a low shot from the edge of the box. Just before the hour mark Moussa Dembele grabbed his second, forcing the ball over the line despite three Heerenveen defenders trying to defend the goal. Patrik Ingelsten netted a consolation three minnutes from time.

Ajax 1 - Twente 0 (Eredivise, May 10, 2009) Managerless Ajax finished the season with a win over Steve McClaren’s charges, Urby Emanuelson firing home a free-kick for the winner.

Zenit St. Petersburg 2 - Krylya Sovietov Samara 0 (Russian Premier League, May 10, 2009) Konstantin Zyrianov slipped Zenit into the lead over Samara after a period of consistent pressure from the hosts on the hour. Pavel Pogrebnyak grabbed the second, tapping home from close range with 20 minutes remaining.
