Snooker World Games 2013 Results: Breaking Down First Day of Action

Brian MaziqueJun 8, 2018

The 2013 Snooker World Games began at Unidad Deportiva Alberto Galindo in Cali, Columbia, on Friday. The first day of action featured three matches with six players vying to advance to the quarterfinals.

The first match of the day was taken by Joe Perry of England. He nipped Ireland's Brendon O'Donoghue, 3-2. Here's a look at the results from the first-round matches:

Perry is the No. 19-ranked player in the world per Snooker.org and the highest-ranked player in the field. He has a 15-4 head-to-head record in all ranking events, thus far, this season. Perry is the one to watch as he is showing signs of surging even higher in the world rankings.

He won the Yixing Open in June and has started off well in the World Games. We'll see how he fares in his next challenge.

Perry will next battle Aditya Mehta of India in a best-of-five match. Mehta easily disposed of Guatemala's Luis Lemus, 3-0, on Friday. Mehta is only ranked 74th in the world.

On paper, this should be an easy win for Perry, but upsets can occur in any sport. Perhaps, Perry's biggest potential pitfall could be overconfidence.

If he stays focused, he should advance to the semifinals. The Perry-Mehta match is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. CEST, 12 p.m. ET.

In the third match of the day, Thailand's Dechawat Poomjaeng also made quick work of his opponent. He sat down Brazil's Pedro Rolim Bohm, 3-0. He must await the results of the matches from the second day of action to learn who his next opponent will be.

Looking Ahead to Day 2 Action

There are four matches scheduled for Saturday, and the brackets will be revealed further for the upcoming rounds. The final will be played on Tuesday, July 30.
