Cesc Fabregas Would Provide Instant Improvement to Manchester United's Midfield
Manchester United has reportedly bid Barcelona star midfielder Cesc Fabregas on for the second time in the current transfer window. With his future in Camp Nou as a fixture in the starting XI, Fabregas should head to Old Trafford and immediately fortify the Red Devils' biggest area of need.
Sources told Sky Sports that Fabregas had been extended the offer on Wednesday. Another source close to the player indicated that Fabregas is contemplating his future because he hasn't been assured a spot as a regular starter by Barca.
Pete Jenson of the Independent confirmed Wednesday in his own report that the Red Devils had indeed gotten Fabregas' attention
As United manager David Moyes looks to smooth the transition in taking over for the legendary and now retired Sir Alex Ferguson, he'll need help in the midfield.
Fabregas would be a wonderful commodity to have. Not only does he sport immense experience despite being only 26 years old, but he's also accustomed to the pressures of playing for one of the most prolific football clubs in the world.
Between Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, the Barcelona midfield is a bit crowded on star power, which is something for Fabregas to consider as he's mulling his options this offseason.
Due to his versatility and experience competing against top-class footballers on a daily basis for playing time, there should be no problem for Fabregas in adjusting to life with the Red Devils.
This past season in La Liga, Fabregas managed 11 goals and 11 assists in 30 matches as Barca went on to win the league easily (h/t WhoScored.com). A trophy will be the expectation for Manchester United in the English Premier League, too, and Fabregas is the type of player who can live up to that type of hype.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique suggested that United is wasting its time trying to lure Fabregas away (h/t Yahoo! via The Sun).ย Pique makes a good point about how Fabregas finally got back to his native land by going to Camp Nou from Arsenal.
Alex Song also seems certain that Fabregas will remain his teammate, as reported by Sky Sports.
However, the minutes and production on the pitch will be in richer supply if Fabregas makes a return to the EPL.
Fernando Polo of El Mundo Deportivo also reports that Fabregas has considered a move to England, which ESPN's Duncan McMath was able to relay in his recent piece.
McMath made a great point, too, about Barca's acquisition of Brazilian sensation Neymar, who was signed in early June. With his presence up front, it will force Fabregas into the midfield even more prominently, where he'll be stuck between Xavi and Iniesta even more.
While Barcelona does have the official say as to whether Fabregas will be able to change clubs this summer, a Sky Sports source indicates the club will leave the decision up to Fabregas whether he wants to leave. Barca will consider a ยฃ35 million offer, though.
Moyes is ringing in a new era for Manchester United and needs a foundational player in the midfield to build around. An attacking asset would be ideal.
The Red Devils need to maintain plenty of firepower on offense to combat the clubs vying for the EPL trophy. Keeping possession will be a huge part of that, and Fabregas is one who can turn defense into offense as seamlessly as anyone.
Despite the sentiment Barcelona has conveyed to the public about not wanting to sell Fabregas, it seems it's ultimately up to the Spaniard to decide his fate.
Fabregas would be wise to take another shot in the EPL with United as a cornerstone of world football's richest clubโespecially if it's truly his choice.
A fresh start and the opportunity to prove himself as even more of a star should lure him, along with the opportunity to instantly improve United's thinnest part of the roster.
