New York Giants: Why I Am a Fan

Tony RoseMay 9, 2009

It goes deeper than just the team, it's the history.

I have been a New York Giants fan for as long as I can remember, but most vividly since 1986 when we won it all. I remember the team being as defensively tough as a team could be with game-changing players like the original LT, Lawrence Taylor, and Leonard Marshall.

No nonsense hard-hitters like Pepper Johnson and Gary Reasons would jar plenty of balls loose.

Flanked by sticky-fingered Terry Kinard and Perry Williams, we'd bully our way through the NFC playoffs in '86, beating the Redskins and 49ers by a combined score of 66-3.

Offensive beasts like Joe Morris and Mark Bavaro led by Phil Simms gave me plenty of great memories on the way to that glistening Vince Lombardi trophy. Sorry Broncos fans, you'd have your glory later on, but it was our time.

Those Giants stood for what New Yorkers were and still are: tough, gritty, resilient, and driven. Who else would I root for? As the saying goes, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. Coach Bill Parcells, as much as any player, embodied all of these traits.

The new and improved World Champion Giants, still every much as resilient although not as defensively dominant as their predecessors, still get the job done. I am sure Patriots fans can attest to that—what's not to love?

Whether we win it all like in '86, '90, and '08, or if we run out of time like so many other countless years, I am a New Yorker through and through and I bleed Giant blue.
