Manchester United Transfer Rumours: Cesc Fabregas Must Remain Club's Top Target

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

Cesc Fabregas would be the perfect addition for Manchester United as the club attempts to defend their Premier League title. Although the Red Devils are involved in multiple transfer sagas, landing the Barcelona star should remain the top priority.

Kevin Palmer of ESPN reports United are working on a third offer for the talented midfielder even though Barca firmly resisted the first two bids. He states the latest effort is likely going to represent a club-record total of nearly £35 million.

"

United's decision to submit a third bid for the 26-year-old appears to suggest they are not yet ready to give up on the chief transfer target for this summer, with manager Moyes happy to speak openly about progress on the potential deal in his media briefings on United's pre-season tour.

While Barcelona have given no indication they are actively looking to move Fabregas, the Spanish international is apparently reconsidering his future. Sources told Sky Sports the lack of guaranteed first-team football is a major factor.

"

However a source close to Fabregas has told Sky Sports News that the player is considering his position having been given no assurances that he will be a regular starter next season.

Barcelona may consider a £35million offer, according to the source, but will ultimately leave the decision up to the player and will not force him out.

"

Based on that report, it seems like United's persistence might be paying off. Whereas Fabregas could get lost in the shuffle at times with Barca, he would step right into a prominent role for the Red Devils. There would be no concerns about playing time at Old Trafford.

Furthermore, as David Moyes sets his lineup for the new campaign, providing a boost to the midfield should be his biggest focus in the coming weeks. No matter which angle you analyze the situation from, Fabregas and United appear to be a good match.

The club is dealing with a number of other issues at the same time, though.

Wayne Rooney continues to generate a lot of attention. Amid interest from Chelsea, Moyes has insisted throughout the process that the longtime United star is not for sale. Nothing changed when he discussed the situation after a friendly defeat in Japan (via the Telegraph).

"

We have said and the club have said he is not for sale. That has not changed. I do expect Wayne to be in Stockholm. As far as I know he is coming on.

He has started light jogging and the feedback from the physios is that he is progressing so hopefully those dates will still be right when we get back.

"

In terms of other potential additions beyond Fabregas, both Marouane Fellaini and Gareth Bale have been linked in recent days.

Neil Custis of the Sun reports United have one week to land the Everton defensive midfielder before his buyout clause expires. James Ducker of the Times reports the Red Devils are weighing a possible massive offer for the Tottenham sensation.

It's a lot to handle for Moyes, who wasn't forced to deal with so many high-profile situations at one time during his time at Everton. That's why it's important to key in on one thing at a time, and Fabregas should remain the top target until the situation is resolved one way or another.

Everything else should stay on the back burner until Fabregas is either a member of the squad or it's clear United won't be able to land him. Then it will be time to consider alternative options, including a long-shot run at Bale.

Otherwise, they risk missing out on everything if Moyes is trying to accomplish four or five different tasks at once. That includes getting his current squad ready after some lackluster preseason showings in the early stages of the tour.

One main focus at a time should be the plan of attack. Right now, that should be Fabregas.
