Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Bid on Cesc Fabregas Should Be Last

Jun 8, 2018

If Manchester United's latest bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is denied once again, David Moyes should find better targets to spend his time trying to acquire.

According to Ben Smith of BBC SportMoyes has confirmed that he upped the club's failed bid (believed to be worth £26 million) to £30 million in an attempt to lure the 26-year-old away from the La Liga power.

However, the offer is expected to meet the same fate as the first one because, as Smith reports, a Barcelona source has already said that Fabregas is not for sale. It's a point that the source believes has been made very clear to United.

Apparently not clear enough.

When asked whether Moyes would continue to pursue Fabregas in light of another failed bid, the new United manager remained hopeful:

"

I think a point does come but I think when you are interested in good players you want to give it every opportunity to materialise. And I'll do that.

I'll hope that things can continue to try to move forward.

"

While there's something to be said for Moyes' persistence, continuing his pursuit of a player whose club  has repeatedly said is off the market would reach comical levels with yet another bid.

It's understandable to an extent. Fabregas might be the perfect summer acquisition for United. He's an elite midfielder who can add a scoring punch to the lineup. His 11 goals last season were good for No. 2 on the Barcelona side, and getting out of the shadow of Lionel Messi should only add to that number.

With Wayne Rooney reportedly unhappy in Manchester, the acquisition of Fabregas would make selling Rooney a much more realistic possibility.

However, the stark reality is that Fabregas to United is likely a pipe dream. According to an article from the Daily Record, Moyes reportedly made a huge bid to bring Cristiano Ronaldo into the fold, but the Scot was denied. Real president Florentino Perez declared that the superstar striker will finish his career in Madrid, according to John Drayton of the Daily Mail.

Now Moyes is faced with a similar situation. He can either continue to pursue players that the club has very little chance of signing, or he could turn his attention to players who are more likely to be shopped by their respective clubs.

Considering the fact that he hasn't made a big signing since taking over for Sir Alex Ferguson, he would be better off doing the latter than continuing to chase what he can't have.
