Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Bid Still Won't Land Cesc Fabregas

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

Manchester United are trying to make a splash by acquiring Cesc Fabregas. Unfortunately, that prospect still seems unlikely.

After a primary offer was rejected by Barcelona, Mark Ogden of the Telegraph reported that the club made a new £30 million bid for the midfielder. Manager David Moyes then confirmed the bid:

"

My understanding is that [chief executive Ed Woodward] has had a response and has spoken with them. I think we have made a second offer but Ed is dealing with that rather than me here personally just now.

When you are interested in good players you want to give it every opportunity to materialise. I will hope things will continue to move forward.

"

Unfortunately, this one was also rejected, according to Charles Perrin of the Daily Express.

Obviously, the management of Manchester United does not know the word "quit" because they are at it again. ESPN reports that the club is preparing a third bid for the talented player.

It makes sense that United would try this hard to bring in Fabregas. The defending EPL champions are looking to improve in the midfield, as well as make a big splash signing to excite fans in Moyes' first year as manager.

Bringing in the world-class player would solve both of these problems, in addition to helping make the club a contender for a Champions League title.

The problem is that it is near impossible to bring the player to Old Trafford, especially considering all the signs that say he's not going anywhere.

First up was manager Tito Vilanova, who said he's "spoken to Cesc and he wants to stay. He wants to win titles with Barca," according to Jamie Sanderson of Metro. While Vilanova is no longer in charge at Barcelona due to health concerns, the rest of the management were just as clear.

Sky Sports quoted Barcelona vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu, who said in the Spanish magazine Sport,"Barcelona can assure you we will not entertain any offers for Cesc. It is totally ruled out, he's not for sale."

According to Ben Smith of BBC Sport, even club president Sandro Rosell has been clear in his  communications with United saying a sale will not happen.

As teammate Gerard Pique told Neil Custis of the Sun, "United are wasting their time."

Fabregas had an excellent year with Barcelona, scoring 11 goals to go with 11 assists. Only Lionel Messi contributed to more goals for the La Liga champs.

Despite a roster that features Andres Iniesta, Xavi and others, Fabregas led the club with 30 starts last season and has a large enough role to be unconcerned about his playing time next season.

Additionally, the Spanish club, as currently constructed, should be favored to win multiple trophies next year. The club won La Liga last year and reached the UCL semifinals. Adding Neymar to the group will make it even better as they look to possibly win a treble.

There is little reason for Fabregas to move to United, and there is even less reason for Barcelona to be willing to sell him.

Either the club needs to greatly increase the next bid to the £50 million range to at least force Barca to make a decision, or it must give up on this acquisition altogether.

In reality, the latter option seems more likely.
