Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Are Foolish to Hold on to Luis Suarez

Richard LangfordJun 6, 2018

Liverpool is not going to be forced into trading star Luis Suarez, but it needs to consider letting him move onโ€”for a substantial fee of course.ย

Liverpool has reportedly alreadyย rejectedย a ยฃ30 million bid from Arsenal for Suarez, and Liverpool has been adamant that Suarez is not for sale. Manager Brendan Rodgers,ย according to Dominic King of theย Daily Mail, has said as much.ย

Asย Mark Ogdenย ofย The Telegraphย notes,ย Suarez joined his teammates this past Sunday in Australia, at which point, Rodgers was quick to assert the power of his team. Ogden passes along this quote from Rodgers:ย โ€œThis is something we will control. This situation will not be controlled by the player."

Let me just say, I love this statement. Liverpool doesn't need to let any individual force it into any move the club does not feel is advantageous for it. Suarez is unhappy with Liverpool? That's his problem at this point. No one forced him to ink aย long-term contract with the club.ย

All of that said, a club can't use spite or a power trip to fuel itself into a situation that is harmful, either. Rodgers seems to be in full realization of this as well.ย

Ogden also passed along this quote from Rodgers: "Every player has a value and a worth, but it doesnโ€™t mean we are going to sell him."

As long as Liverpool winds up actually selling Suarez, this stance is perfect. When other clubs realize a team's hand is forced to get rid of a player, they are a lot less likely to overpay.ย

By coming out and stating Liverpool is perfectly comfortable retaining Suarez's services, it retains a position of power, and that is exactly where Liverpool needs to be.ย

Liverpool doesn't need to be impatient in this process, but it does need to get the maximum value for Suarez and move on.ย

While there is no questioning the 26-year-old's talent and ability to make an impact in matches, Suarez hasn't exactly been a model of self-restraint on the pitch.

Suarez has made it blatantly clearย that he wants to move on from Liverpool. While the Reds can't let his wishes rule their decision, do they really want a disgruntled player with a history of letting his emotions get the better of him being one of their on-pitch leaders?ย

I should certainly hope not. The Reds must take the best offer available for Suarez and use the money on players who actually want to play there.ย
