Manchester United Transfer News: Making Bid for Cesc Fabregas Public Wise Move

Richard LangfordJul 22, 2013

David Moyes is not hiding his interest in Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas. He desperately wants to add a midfielder and has his sights locked on Fabregas.

Moyes confirmed his interest in a press conference, with the club's official website passing along the news.

I don't expect this statement to aid in actually bringing Fabregas to Old Trafford, but it will still have a positive effect on the Red Devils' offseason.

In fact, it is looking increasingly like the Red Devils will not be able to land Fabregas.

Barcelona have been adamant that Fabregas is not for sale.

Just last Friday, speaking to Spanish daily Sport, Barcelona vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu was quoted, via Sky Sports, as saying: "Barcelona can assure you we will not entertain any offers for Cesc. It is totally ruled out, he's not for sale."

In that same piece by Sky Sports, it is reported that Barcelona had already rejected a £25 million bid for Fabregas from United. Sky Sports went on to report that the club upped the offer of £30 million plus add-ons.

Meanwhile, Greg Stobart of Goal.com reports that Barcelona have turned down said £30 million bid and the Red Devils have returned with a £35 million bid.

While the truth of these rumors and Fabregas' potential home for next season is unknown, the fact that Moyes made his club's interest in Fabregas public knowledge remains a smart move.

The Red Devils have seen their EPL competition aggressively pursue top targets.

Manchester City have brought aboard players like Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic, Fernandinho and Jesus Navas. Meanwhile, Chelsea have been busy trying to land, among others, Wayne Rooney. They have already brought in talented youngsters like Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel.

Also, Arsenal have been connected to numerous big targets and, as ESPN reports, Arsene Wenger would like Fabregas to return.

Amidst all of this, it was important for Moyes to send a message to his fans, rival clubs and the rest of the soccer world that his powerful club is not going to sit idle this offseason. This helps keep fans buzzing about the Red Devils, and it sends a message to everyone involved in this transfer season that the deep-pocketed Red Devils are set to be big players.

So, while I'm not convinced that Moyes' comments mean the Red Devils will be adding Fabregas, I am confident it means they will be welcoming some new top-flight talent.
