British Open Purse 2013: Complete Breakdown of Earnings and Top Performers

Phil Mickelson was awarded the Claret Jug and given a large wad of cash for his performance on Sunday at the 2013 Open Championship.

Mickelson played extraordinarily well in the final round at Muirfield, shooting a five-under 66 after birdieing six holes—four of which were part of the last six—and bogeying just one. Playing three under for the championship was more than enough for Lefty to win his fifth career major tournament.

The victory also earned him $1.4 million.

While no one played nearly as well as Mickelson did throughout the tournament, there were several other golfers who made out quite well at The Open Championship in terms of big pay days.

Top Performers…aside from Mickelson

Henrik Stenson, E—(Second Place: $832,106)

Henrik Stenson was one of the more underrated contenders at Muirfield all week long. He was two under entering the weekend, but didn’t play so well on Saturday. In the third round, he only birdied one hole while bogeying four of them. His three-over 74 still didn’t put him in the worst spot to make a Sunday run toward the top.

In the final round, Stenson played well on the front nine, finishing half the course at two-under par. The 12th and 13th holes gave him a bit of trouble, though, as hit made bogey on both of them. He cleaned up with a birdie on 17 to finish the day at one under, but it still wasn’t enough to challenge Mickelson.

This was the third time in Stenson’s career where he came up just short at The Open Championship. He had a pair of third-place finishes entering this year, and had never placed better than that at any major.

He’s definitely getting close to winning one, though. This year, he’s finished in the top 25 in all three major tournaments.

Ian Poulter, +1—(T-Third Place: $428,776)

Ian Poulter was one of the biggest Sunday surprises at The Open Championship this year. He didn’t play that well entering the final round, as he came into Sunday at five over. But he made up for it by giving fans on the course and those watching at home a show that they’re sure not to forget.

Poulter played even par through the first eight holes at Muirfield and then went on a four-hole stretch that was incredible to see. He eagled the ninth hole and then birdied the 10th, 11th and 12th holes to get back to even par remarkably quickly.

He couldn’t keep it up, unfortunately, as he finished the championship at one over.

Even still, no one expected to see Poulter rise up the leaderboard on Sunday—or especially not all the way up to third place. He’s now placed in the top 10 at The Open Championship three times in the last six years.

Last year, Poulter finished tied for ninth place. He’s still seeking his first career major victory.

Adam Scott, +1—(T-Third Place: $428,776)

Adam Scott came into the final round on Sunday looking to avenge his embarrassing collapse a year ago at The Open Championship.

He was on the hunt for most of the day, but couldn’t play well enough to take home the Claret Jug. While he didn't win, he now has back-to-back top-three British Open finishes.

Scott shot even par through the first three rounds of the championship and needed to put together a strong round to come out victorious. He didn’t start out so hot, bogeying two of the first four holes, but bounced back with three straight birdies to close out the front nine.

The back nine was more of an adventure for Scott. While he birdied the 11th hole, he bogeyed four straight holes, which ultimately wrecked his shot at winning. He did birdie the 18th hole, but it was to no avail, as he was already out of contention.

He may not have won, but it was still a strong showing from one of the game’s best.
