5 Creative Midfielders Manchester United Should Be Chasing This Summer

Max TowleJul 22, 2013

David Moyes has highlighted the need for additional options in creative midfield at Manchester United.

With Thiago Alcantara having rejected the Red Devils' advances and made the move to Bayern Munich, the Scotsman must re-evaluate his options.

Here are five options that Moyes should consider. Cesc Fabregas seems to be at the top of the list, and is featured here.

If United see their reported £30 million bid for the Barcelona star rejected, as reported by the Daily Mail, this article will offer four more suggestions.

Cesc Fabregas

There is little doubt the reports linking Manchester United with Cesc Fabregas are genuine. David Moyes has admitted as much himself, according to Yahoo! Sport.

The majority of United fans would love to see the arrival of the 26-year-old at Old Trafford. He is a world-class footballer who can undoubtedly make a difference.

However, there is still a lingering feeling of unease.

Barcelona vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu has told Spanish paper Sport that the club "won't listen to any offers for Cesc," according to ESPN.

The last thing Moyes needs is to see him fail in the pursuit of top transfer targets early in his reign.

Yohan Cabaye

Newcastle United did not have the best of campaigns in 2012/13, but creative midfielder Yohan Cabaye still emerged with his high reputation intact.

The Frenchman moved to St. James' Park two years ago, and has since proven himself to be one of the elite passers in the Premier League.

According to the Sunday People (via The Mirror), "United have launched a £15 million bid for unsettled Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye."

"The champions are hoping to pip big-spending Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, who are both keen to take the French ace back home," the report claims.

A transitional player who is adept at moving the ball from the back line to the attacking line, Cabaye would be an intriguing option should Fabregas stay in Spain.

Fredy Guarin

This one is a little out of left-field. How about Internazionale's Fredy Guarin as a potential transfer target for Moyes and United?

The roaming midfielder is pure quality. He is both technically adept and strong on the ball. He also has one of the most feared long-range shots in football.

Last month, citing Gazzetta dello Sport, British tabloid The Express claimed that United had already made inquiries about the 26-year-old.

The report stated "Moyes is reported to be eyeing up a number of new additions at Old Trafford for next season, with Inter Milan pair Andrea Ranocchia and Fredy Guarin linked with moves to Manchester."

Guarin has made 42 appearances at international level for Colombia, and scored 10 goals in 40 games last term for the Nerazzurri.

Luka Modric

4 of 5

Luka Modric's debut campaign at Real Madrid started slowly, but the Croatian had become a vital member of the Los Blancos squad by May.

The diminutive playmaker has the creative brilliance to thrive at Old Trafford. Fans will remember his meteoric improvement at Tottenham Hotspur before he moved to Spain.

If he were to move to United, he would play the free-wheeling midfielder alongside the more static Michael Carrick.

According to a recent report in Spanish paper Marca (via The Express), United are set to make a significant offer to Real for Modric should their bid for Fabregas fail.

A player of his quality would cost the Red Devils no less than £30 million.

Bernard

5 of 5

A report in the Daily Mail claims Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are currently leading the chase for Atletico Mineiro's Bernard.

"

The pacey wide player, who primarily operates on the left, will not come cheap, after Porto had a £15.5 million bid rejected by Mineiro president Alexandre Kalil, who set the asking price at just over £20 million but is expected to accept around £18 million.

"

The quoted prices are steep, but the Brazilian attacking midfielder is a prodigious talent similar to former United target Lucas Moura.

The only reservation British clubs should have regarding the 20-year-old is his tiny, 5'5" frame.

The Red Devils are yet to be linked with a move for his services, but who knows what tomorrow will throw up in a typically topsy-turvy transfer window?

If United's move for Fabregas fails, which creative midfielder should the club target?
